Smallpox is raging at Salem, Roanoke County, thirty cases having already been reported. The towns of Roa noke and Whytheville have quaran tined against Salem, and other south. western towns are considering the question of doing likewise. Roanoke College has suspended and the stu dents have gone home. The public schools have also closed and business is at a standstill.
