Mr. G.~.D. Hattiwanger Dead. A telegram a day or two ago brought the sad intelligence that Mr. Geo. D. Haltiwanger, formerly a Professor in Newberry College, and lately a lawyer in Lexing'ton, committed suicide by drowningj himself at Fort Worth, Texas, Thursday, the 17th instant. Supreme Court Decisions. The following decisions in cases from this County were filed by the Supreme Court the 21st instant: James K. Mendenhall, et al., vs. Geo. S. Mower, Trustee; judgment of .Circuit Court affirmed; opinion by Simpson, C. J. 47 Ilillary R. Mangum et al., vs. John G. Piester et al.; judgment of Circuit Court affirmed: opinion by Simpson, C. J. To the Exposition. Fifty-eight persons left Newberry by the up train yesterday for the Atlanta Exposition. In the party were four Professors and thirty-seven students of Newberry College and six ladies. Special rates, (outside of the regular reduced rates of four cents a mile. round trip) are now offered. The fare from Ne~w berry to a person going alone, or to any number less than ten, is $11.10 for the round trip; to parties of ten $7.90 each; to parties of twenty $6.70; to parties of thirty SJ.>.60: to par. ties of fifty $4.50. Two young men from Catawba Coun v, North Carolina, passed through Newberry Monday on their way t( Dade County, Florida. They were traveling in a two-horse wagon, and had a saddle horse, tent, provisions and other conveniences of travel with them. T hey are going all the way by private conveyance, and are going to stay. Shotgun Policy. Hilliard Cromer, colored, was shol and painfully wounded with a shotgun last Friday night near Mr. J. B. Kemp son's, in this County. Hilliard and an other man named Wise were walking along the road going toward Mr. Kemp son's, where Hlilliard lives. They no ticed on the roadside several times thal some person seemed to be following them. At a certain point this person came into the road from the woods, anc as he did so Wise said, "There's Jak4 Bowers." Cromer stooped down tc pick up a rock, when the person fired, the load lodging in Cromer's thigh Cromer ran and the person followet him and struck him on the head witt the gun, and ihen ran off. WVise is nol certain that it was Bowers; but think: it was. He and Cromner have had difficulty lately about Bowers' wife. In Time. Clarkson, of the Refister, paid Newherry a visit Friday. Rev. E. P. McClintock spent last week in Anderson County, assisting in a protracted meeting. Messrs. G. F. Long and F. A. Schum pert returned Monday from the Atlanta Exposition. They say it beats a circus. Mr. G. W. Doyle's family arrived Saturday from Atlanta. They are liv ing in Mr. Geo. E. Summer's house at Helena. Mr. S. W. Teague has the Florida fever. He will go down on a prospect ing tour soon, and if he be pleased with the country will settle. Col. T. B. Crews, of the Laurensville Herald, passed through Newberry Thursday on his way to the Atlanta Exposition. Col. C. keeps his eyes open, and sees everything going on, from a circus to a World's Fair. Rev. J. A. Sligh and Mrs. Sligh re turned last week from a month's visit to Florida. They enjoyed their trip very much, except that their youngest child, which they carried with them, was sick all the time, and it is still very ill.
