Experienee haz demonstrated thal cotton may be grown on almost any soil .here the climate permit. the maturity of the bolls, with judi cious - culture and sutitable fertili zers; but there are certain classes of soils especially adapted to this crop. The alluvial or river bot toms stand first in the list. The bottom lands. so well adapted to cotton, have an inexhaustiblt supply of vegetable mould whicl. successive overflows have de posited on them. Rich cane brake lands and rolling prairies. generally designated as black lands, are also valuable for the certaint. with which they produce crops, their comparative freedom from destructive insects and a rolling surface promoting draiiag6. Bot tom and black lands, according to fertility, yield from one half to two bales of cotton per acre. These estimates are, of course, only ap proximate, and are given to show the relative value of the lands un der description. The next are the light sandy and red or clay soils. On the light sandy lands, i. e., if the native growth is oak; or rather, hard woods, the yield will be about one bale to two acres. Red lands or clay soils in the rolling portions of the country produce from one-half to one-third of a bale to the acre. Exclude lands composed wholly ef clay, and very compact in their natures, lands having no depth of soil and an impermeable subsoil. Beginners will do well to bear in mind that the crop demands for satisfactory results fine surface cul tUre, plant-food in abundance, and entire freedom from the live roots of herbaceous or perennial plants and the absence of weed seeds and 2 rnbbish- of all kinds. To secure these condi-tions the land ought to be broken up early enough to in sure the decomposition of dead herbage, quack grass and the like, that they may be turned under by the plough With the cotton plant, as wvith most other growths, the yield may be greatly increased and improved in quality by thorough culture and appropriate fertilizers. THE CoRN OzoP.--Tborough prep aration of the land, even if it costs some time, pays. So does ample manuring. For giving the plant a start-off use a handful of rich comn N post in the hill. Where other ma terials are'used in the bill such as super phosphates, care must be taken not. to br-ing them in too * close contact with the seed. which may thereby be barned. Some farmers soak the seed in a~ strong solution of saltpetre as a safeguard against insects and vermin ;others coat thinly with tar-a pint of which made hot and stirred in a peck of seed will coat each grain. The discussions of the Gunpowder Club -given elsewhere go so fully over the ground of the preparation and pla'nting of the corn crop that anything further here would appear unnecessary, and we refer our readers to the views of its practical members In nine cases out of ten, says an exchange, sunmer complaints can be checked, if taken in season, by ~~.iearing flannel over the region of the bowels. iUtil the British army in India was compelled to wear flan nel during the entire hot season it was constantly reduced by diar rhea. Diet is far, more potent than medicine in curing this disorder, and when dulyysisted by flannel and enforced quiet rarely fails to cure if used promptly. Flannel should be worn by night as well as* by day. POTATOo PIE.-One pound mashed potatoes, rubbed through a colan der; one-half pound butter, creamed with sugar ; six eggs, white and yolks separately ; one lemon, squeez ed into the potato while hot; one cup ful milk, one teaspoonful of nut-, meg and the same of mace ; two cupfuls white sugar ; bake in open shells of paste ; to be eaten cold. In boiling meat for soup cold: water should be used to extract the' juices. If the meat is' wanted for itself alone, plunge in boiling wa ter at once. Cool rainwater and soda will re move machine grease from wash able fabrics. WHTSA PRINTER? A printer, according to a pun iing exchange, is the most curious :eing living. He may have a bank' and 'quoins and not be worth a cent; have 'small caps' and aeitber wife nor children. Others may run fast, he gets along swifter by 'setting' fast. He may be making impressions' without eloquence : may use the -lye' without offend ing, and still tell the truth ; while others cannot stand while they set, he can 'set standing,' and do both at the same time.; may have to use 'furniture,' and yet have no dwell ing ; may make and put away 'pi' and never see a pie, much less eat it during his whole life; be a hu man being and a 'rat' at the same; may 'press' a good deal, and not ask a favor; may handle a sbout ing iron' and know nothing about a cannon, gun or pistol; he may move the 'lever' that moves the world, and yet be so far from the morning globe as a hog upon a mole hill; 'spread sheets' without being a house-wife; he may lay his form on the -bed' and yet be ob liged to sleep on the floor; he may use the 'dagger' without shedding blood, and .from the earth may handle 'stars ;' he may be of a 'roll ing' disposition, and still never desire to travel; he can have a 'sheep's' foot and never be deform ed ; never without a 'case' and knows nothing about law or phy sic; be always correcting his 'er rors' and be growing worse every every day; have 'embraces,' with out ever having the arms of a lass thrown around him; have his 'form locked up,' and at the same time be far from the jail, watchhouse, or any other confinement; he may be plagued by the 'devil' and be a Christian of the very best type. As an illustration of the enor mous increase of the use of opium and morphia in the United States the following statistics have a painful interest, and it must be re membered that this is no except ional case. In one of our large cit ies., containing twenty-five years ago a population of 57,000, the sales of opium and morphia reach ed 3.50 pounds and 375 ounces re spectively or about forty-three grains of opium and three grains of morphia yearly for each individual, if the consumption was averaged. The population is now 91,000, and 3,500 pounds of opium and 5,500 ounces of morphia are sold annually. While the population has increased fifty-nine per cent., the sale of opium has increased 800 per cent., and morphia 1,100, or an average of 206 grains of opium and twenty four grains of morphia to' every in habitant. But there are additional sales of from 400,000 to 500,000 pills of morphia, which would give us 170 ounced more of the drug. One-foruth of the opium sold is consumed in its natural state. and three-fourths are made into opiates, the principal one being laudanum. The imports of opium into the UJted States for the years 1879 and 1880, ending the thirtieth of June, were 533,451 pounds, valued at 8'2,786,606. A tortoise died in England aged 220 ; another at 128 years. The pike, a kind of fish has been said to live for 267 years, and the carp for 200 years. The gigantic salamnan der- may live for a greatly prolonged period, and frogs and toads are long-lived anim'tls. A toad has been kept thirty years without showing signs of age, and then died through an accident. Whales have been supposed to live from 300 to 400 years. Return equity and justice for evil done to you, and pay goodness by goodness. Surely half the world must be blind-they can see nothing unless it glitters. There are many moral people whose virtues somehow seem to be a misfit. A woman listens to a play with her mind, and judges it with herK senses. A woman need not always recall her age ; but she should never for get it. Books are embalmed minds. Fame' is a flower upon a dead man's heart. Good will, like a good name, is got by many actions and lost by oe. It is astonishing how keen stupid people are in discovering affronts. Kindness is the golden chain by M.
