Tuesday evening "Fun on thre Pacific" was given in a d jolly, rollicking style, and was greatly d enjoyed. Some of the character sketeh es, interspersed here and there, were excellent. Wednesday evening the I company performed their new play, "Sam'l of Posen". with Mr. Curtis at Samuel. His acting was as near to the life as possibly could be. t It is not often that Newberry is so rfortunate as to be visited by such a corn Spany as Ford's, and we are glad he had a good house; it will encourage first t class companies to come here. As to whether theatrical exhibitions are a benefit or not there may be a difference Sof opinion ; but there can be no doubt that if we are to have them we should have the best. Various and all About. .The dust last week was dreadful. t lMr. Casper Smith, of Laurens, ex I hibited a splendid pair of bay mares at. t the County Fair. s~ Laurens, Edgefield and Union, to d gether with other surrounding Coun e ties, were well represented in beauty iand gallantry at the County Fair. n Mr. S. C. Goodshall exhibited the fine n thoroughbred stallion Patriot at the l County Fair. His sire was by import ed Albion, and his dam by imported & Glenco. d M~r. O. B. Butler had on exhibition at the Fair one of the Tanner engines - with spark extinguisher. With this sone can gin in perfect safety anywhere; 'not a spark escapes from the engine. -Col. Thomas W. Holloway had two it fine Yorkshire pigs on exhibition at the n County Fair that were beauties-if any ) Ithing in the hog line can be such. They i were pure white, full blood, and six 3. months of age. ;M. Foot & Son, Ed w. Scholtz and B. - H. Cline & Co., had each a beautiful 'showcase of goods tastefully arranged at the Fair that added much to the atp t, pearance of the ball. The organ rolled its notes from the growling dia pason to the gentle flute; and the congregation accompanied by deep sepulchral coughs to coughs scarcely audible, because they had not a- yet heard of the wonderful efficacy of ~'Dr. Bull's Cough Syrup. eC Ham p Mitchell and Ambrus Wil li ams, both colored, had a fight at Hel r ena Sunday morning. Williams was s badly cut on the forehead and cheek ., and was struck on the back of the head l with a stick, which came near breaking e- tbe skull. Dr. Gilder was.sent for and 1e attended the wounded man. A good many darkies came down on the Laurens tramn Saturdaty, " to see the show." They laid in a supply of mean whiskey while here, and while a- returning had quite a row on the cars near Kinard's Turn Out. In the melee a pistol went off, and the ball went r through a colored woman's leg. n- Mr. Thos. S. Moorman's three year old colt, which was on exhibition and >., carried oft two premiums at the County Fair, died Sunday night at Col. B. F. 1Griffin's, where he had been driven that es day by Mr. Robt. Moormaan. It was an * excellent animal, gentle and well train d- ed, and its owner prized it very iighly. - The mule that took the premium at our County Fair as the best South Caro klina raised was eighteen years old; but L didn't Jook to be over eight, and was as Sactive and lively as a colt. It had been inworked nearly all its life by white men s,and had been taken care of. This j shows the benefits of good attention to e;stock. 'P .h DOMESTIC DEPARTMENT 0 A PERFECT SUCCESS! P< M PREMIUITMS, &c. F. In P The County Fair was held at the Fair P Grounds of the Society, Wednesday. S Thursday and Friday of last week. C The number of entries far exceeded Si that of any previous year, and di amounted to thirteen hundred and T eleven. From some cause the de partwents that should have been most Ti fully represented had the fewest . exhibits; the samples of Field Crops were extremely limited. In qual ity, however, this department was Y ood enough. There was only one bale % >f cotton, a few half-bushels of corn, Ca wheat and oats, and a pretty good show- Ca ng of large and fine turnips and pota- ' :oes. A sar-ple half-busbel of wheat Al n this department deserves special n Dr nention. It is called the Bill Dallas, Dr md is rust-proof. Mr. Jno. R. Spear- M JaI nan, Jr., who exhibited this sample, ested the wheat thoroughly this sea- 0. on. He planted this and common a vbeat side by side. The common R. fvheat had the rust baly, and made less Dr han half a crop. The Bill Dallas did Mr ot have the sign of rust, and made a Lill yield. - Mr. Spearman also exhibit d a sample of Burt's rust-proof oats, Co vhich succeeded as well as the wheat 1o lid. Dr Going up-stairs into the Ladies De- je )artment everything pretty and attrac- ter ive met the eye--beautiful quilts, silk, II vorsted and cotton, crochet work, rugs, ,arpets, mats, lace, and everything else hat ingenuity and good taste could de- Jo ise or deft fingers fashion were dis- be layed in rich profusion. And then the PDr ellies, pickles, preserves, wines, cakes, )read, butter, and so many other things hat are so pleasant to have about a f iouse and render woman a necessity in J. lomestic economy, were beautiful to At pe ook upon and would go straight to a L. nan's heart by the shortest way ever Br et discovered by housekeepers. We ~ould linger over this dlepartmient a veek-provided the cooks were out and Ra he supply should last so long-but we Ri ust desist. Nature, in this depart- A. ent, was so far outstripped by her do ~oung sister, Art, that we feel it due to e elder dame to say that her pears nd her apples were of a most excellent uality; one bachelor exhibited fourteen Co arietes of apples, all very fine; a y ady exhibited a "baker's dozen" of ele- A. ant pears. Ca In the Stock Department the exhibi- Ba ion was about as good as last year robably a little falling off. There vere some very fine horses on hand.
