There is going to be a large crop of cotton, and our farmers will wvant to know how to prepare it for market with the greatest possible dispatch and the least- possible expense. Theeclosing examination of the pupils of the Female Academny came off last week. The examination was highly creditable to the pupils and teachers. To-morrow (Wednesday) evening several of the pupils will read original essays at Thespian Hall. Thursday evening there will be a Musical Soiree at the Academy. The patrons and friends of the Academy are cordially invited to. these entertain Accidentally Killed. Freddie Sebumpert, who lived not far from Prosperity, shot and killed him self a&cidentally Saturday, the 19th. Hie was hunting, and in shaking some vines to frighten a squirrel his gun be came entangled and was discharged, the load entering his breast and kil1ig himi instantly. Freddie was 18 yer I of age, and was the youngZest son of Mr. Jesse Scbum pert, who was killed by the explosion of a steam engine at Mrs. Sallie Fellers' four or five years ago. Teachers' institute. The 2nd annual meeting of the New-' berry County Teachers' Institute will be held in the Court House July 3d. The subjects for discussion will be (1) School Reward's and Punishments; (2) Moral Instruction in Schools. The first subject will be discussed by Messrs. *Jno. L. Epps and Geo. M. Wilson, and the second b; Messrs. Jno. F. Banks and J. G. Martin. Aul persons are in vited to attend, and all who can should attend and contribute to make the Teachers' Institute what it should be and can become-a great assistance to the cause of education in the County. Ti The Commencement Exercises of Newberry College began Sunday -with ec the Baccalaureate Sermon in the Lu- w theran Church by Rev. J. B. Reimen- a= l snyder, of Savannah, Ga. The text p was from the 9th chapter and 11th verse - of Ecclesiastes: "The race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong." Cc The church was crowded to overflow- an ing. The sermon occupied one hour, of and the :tttention :id interest of the vii congregation did not tire nor waver for do an instant. It was a very line effort, an and is highly spoken of by all who had de the good fortune to hear it. ra At night Rev. Reimensnyder deliver- C~ ed the Address to the Students, Rev. Dr. Meynardie, who had been selected W for this occasion, being absent on ac I ye count of sickness. The address was a l most excellent sermon from the 14th of chapter and 1st verse of the Psalms- It "The fool hith said in his heart there da is no God." The congregation was equal to that at the morng service.14 We can give only a general synopsis of the address or sermon: Whether there is a God is the primary and all-impor- S:t tant question with every human being; Ti that there is a God is proved, 1, by in nate consciousness, 2, by conscience, 3, by creation, 4, by the unanimous con sent of all nations and peoples, and, 5, by the Bible. If there is a God, we should fear Him, and love Him and of worship Him. The closing thought of the sermon was one of startling force, and was presented by the speaker with -powerful effect: it was this-if he is a fool who says there is no (rod, how r much greater fool is he who believing Cl there is a God yet lives as if there were H none! Ramage, be Jr. The applause that greeted the an nouncement of the result proved that e the verdict of the Committee was fully c sustained by the audience. As we go to press Rev. J. B. Elford, the white tramp who was convicted at the Court here about three years ago of Grand Lar cency-stealing a watch from a Mr. Sutherland, has been pardoned by the Governor. His time was nearly out anyway. Mr. Elbert H. Aull, Enumerator for the Town of Newberry, found a colored woman on Mr. J. N. Fowles' place who is thirty-five years old and has thirteen children living and one dead; there is only one set of twins. On Mr. W. Y. Fair's place he found a negro woman 99 years old, and in town a negro man -Dred Rutherford-101. Mr. Aull says ihat be has not yet ascertained the exact population of Newberry, but that it will be about 2,500. Sabbath School Convention. The second annual session of the Newberry County.Sabbath School Con vention will be held in Luther Chapel, at Newherry Court House, on Thursday and Friday, the 1st and 2nd days of Ju ly next, for the transaction of such busi ness as may be brought before the Con vention. aach Sabbath School in the County is entitled to a representation of three delegates.
