Mr. Jacob Summers, who lived on the Lavrens Rail Road near Kinard's Tun Ont, died Tuesday, the 6th inst., in the sixty-fifth year of his age. He was bu ried at Sharon Church Yard Wednesday by Amity Lodge. of Newberry, with Masonio honors. He was a member of the Lutheran Chureh, and a good citi Mrs. Rebecca DeWalt died at her re sidence in Newberry, Tuesday, the 6th, in the 78th year of her age, and was buried at-Cannohi's Creek Church. A little two anda half ya old son of Mr. T. B. Leitzsey, on Saturday last, had one of his fingers cut off and two others nearly by an axe in the hands of an older brother. He said that the same grade of land that woulId sell in Edgefleld County for five dollars per acre sells in this County for ten; that this is the best evidence of the thrift an4-enterprise of our citizens, and that no County in the State contains a more thriving and industrious population. Comic Opera Company which appear,before a Newberry audi ence to-night, we are pleased to, notice some fine enconiums from the Xrs d Courier and other papers. The voices are said to be very good, and particular ly so that of the tenor, Mr. P. A. Wade, and the soprano of Miss E. C. McC., while the whole Company get their meed of praise for singing and their acting. The piece for to-night, Cox and Box, abounds in fun and will convulse the audience with laugnter. Go and see them, and by all means give them a good house. A Word to Correspondents. Our columns are open to discussions of subjects of general puSlic interest. Correspondents express their own opin ions, and we are willing to give place to any communication that is readable and not too long; but by so doing we by no means endorse its sentiments. Correspondents must bear in mind that their communications must be short in order to secure publication. They must also remember another fact; that com munications recommending a person for any county office must be paid for as an advertisement. This is a rule en forced by all properly regulated offices. Otherwise their columns would be filled with such matter. We have no politi cal axe to grind, and we don't propose to turn the grindstone gratis for others. Ti ahave been some severe hail storms in different sections of the Coun ty within the last ten days. Monday, the 5th, hail fell in large quantities in the neighborhood of Col. B. F. Griffin's, ompletely covering the ground and doing considerable damage to grain and to fruit trees. Some of the stones were as large as guinea eggs. Glass in win dows not protected by blinds were shat tered. Tuesday evening, the 6th, it hailed in tcwn. At Mr. Crotwell's, a mile out, it was quite heavy. Mr. C. bad ninety- panes of glass broken out >n the side of his house facing the wind. Hail storms have occurred recer.tly in several sections of the State. The Carolina Spartan speaks of a storm in Spartanbrg County that was very se vere. Wheat and oats were beaten down to the ground, trees wei-e stripped of their leaves, and in one portion of the County pigs and chickens were killed by the stones, some of which were lar ger than hen's eggs. In town window glasses suffered badly. The storm oc curred Monday; and there was another Tuesday almost as severe. Excursion to Charleston. The Railroads offer special induce ments to those wishing to visit Charles ton during the Floral Fair. This is the time of year to see the city in its best aspect, and those who go may count on a pleasant trip. Among the attractions will be the Floral Fair, which opens the 21st and ontinues three days; a Grand Tourna ment the 22d at the Washington Race Course, the three prizes to be, 1, a fine saddle horse, 2, a saddle and bridle, 3, a fine buggy; Capt. Paul Boynton, the world-renowned swimmer, will give a free exhibition in his rubber suit, ofi the Battery on the 23d; on the 26th the Grand Sebuetzenfest will begin at the Schuetzenplatz, to last three days-ex :rsion tramns will run every hour to and from the Platz. Ford's Grand Theatrical Troupe will play in Charles ton during the week. There will be other entertainments, excursions to the slands and other places. Those who visit Charleston at this time will find all that can be asked in the way of pleas ure;. the city has not in years offered so many attractions to visitors as on this ccasion. Gary was in Newberry Tuesday and Wednesday of last week on pro fes sional business. Wednesday night he was serenaded in front of Pope & Fair's ffie by the Newberry Band, and was scorted into the Court House, where a large crowd awaited him. Y. J. Pope, Esq., introduced him to the audience in a neat and graceful speech, referring in complimentary terms to the distinguish' d services rendered by Gen. Gary tc the State in war and in peace. The serenade was intended only as a com pliment to Gen. Gary and in recogni ion of his past services. The sere ade had no sort of connection with te Gubernatoria~l question; it wvas not intended to give him a "'booma as a candidate-tbere was not the re motest allusion to that subject through. out the whole proceedings. Anticipating our summer incursior into the quiet of Williamston, we mad( a flying visit there on Wednesday las and arrived in the gloaming of a: gloomy a twilight as the clerk of th( weather of that ilk could get up. Wf went to see our old friend Deal, one of the most irrepressible and energetic men for his age to be found in a sum mer day's journey, and found him pleas antly occupied discussing a very appe tizing supper at the Hotel, now presided over by a lady, (Mrs. R. C. Sharpe) who knows how to make her guests feel perfectly at home and altogether com fortable. In the hands of this lady Mr. Deal feels that his hotel will suffer nc detriment and will sustain its old, pop ular reputation. The discomfort felt in getting out of the cars into the gloom and chill of the night was soon dissipa ted. It is early to bring to the at tention of the traveling public this fa vorite summer resort, but circumstances alter cases, and we must say that the visitor there this summer will be well cared for-and that we are booked for another visit in the near future. It was the occasion also of the meet ing of the South Carolina Presbytery, the first meeting being held that night, and notwithstanding the unfavorable character of the weather there was a pretty fair attendance of the town folks. New berry was represented by the Revs. R. A. Fair and Ligon, and by Elders S P Boozer, H. D. Boozer and T. C. Brown, and there were between forty and forty-five delegates in attendance. The Rev. R. A. Fair was one of three nominated for the office of Moderator, but as he had no aspirations for that honor and so expressed himself the vote resulted in favor of the Rev. W. F. Pearson, but only by the very small majority of one. This latter gentleman is well and favorably known as the Presbyterian who preaches like a Meth odist, (so Uncle Dick C. says, and with whom be is a great favorite,) he made a good Moderator. On Thursday night, the last of our stay, Mr. Alexander Nor ris, of Anderscn, and from the Theo logical Seminary of Columbia, was or dained and preached an excellent ser Luon. Two pleasant visits were made to the Female College, whieh is in a flourish ing condition, having at this time a larger number of students than at any former period of 'its history. One ol these visits wvas made just as the school had entered the Chapel for morning prayer, and we must express unquali ied delight at the reading of the morn ing lesson which was rendered as with one voice, the singing of the hymn toc was beautiful. In about five weeks two others will graduate, and at the close of the session, Miss Bessie Cannon, a daugh ter of Dr. Cannon, of Newberry.county. We are indeed glad to see Williamstonj College in so prosperous and happy a state. The town looked damp on this occa sion in consequence of the quantity-oi rain which'had fallen, add to this it was cold, bitter cold, we shudder even now at the bare thought, and it rained again, and sleeted and snowed a litt.le, an there was nothing suggestive of ram bles with bright eyed maidens to the spring or any desire for mineral water. We forgot to mention in our refer ene to the hotel and its clever hostess that on the last morning of our stay th< guests were, much to their surprise treated to a dish of fried chicken. Think of such a delicacy so early in the sea son. Where Mrs. Sharp procured the article we could not discover, but sup pose that like all good housekeepers sht had held it in reserve among other pre serves, and in honor of the editor's pres ence brought it out. The sign is a geoo one and we hail it with delight. A Public Meeting Will be held in the Court Hous4 Thursday night, in pursuance of a cal of the City Council, to take measure: for contributing aid to the sugerigg peo pie of Ireland. The citizens of New F!berry have never yet been backward ii any good work.
