Peterson's Magazine For June is already on our'table, xeptionally bright and meritorious n every 'departmecnt. The principal teel en)graving, ''Among the Hills," is one of the rarest beauty. 'rhe dlouble i', colored faishion plate, not ordy gives t.he very latest Parisian -styles, but is also :m exquisite picture. Then there is a colored design for the cover of a blotting hook, to be worked on black saitin, with gold and silver thread, aofter a~ Japanese design, so pretty that every lady, we should thinik, wouid. begin to work one :t once. These coloredI patterns are a spelaty of "Peterson ;" no other Mag zrine giving them ; they appear month ly and must be very expensive. TLhe stories are unusually good, even for this Maigazine, where they are alwvays, as one of our co-temnporatries says, "0f remarkable beauty." The. "W ~ork Table" department is particularly full. Nothing but its enormous circulation c~oldl enab)le "Peterson" to giive so muc(hl for the money: it is incontest ibly the ceapest as well as bosa Magaozine of its kind. Every laody should have it. Its pm'i~ is hut two dollars a yean', Just Perfectly Delicious Was the Union Pie Nic of the various Sabbath Schools of this town on Friday last., In the first place the weather was atlspiCiously beaitiful, elear and bracing, with jst breeze enough to bring out the rose bloon on the faces of the dear bil dren, the sweet maidens and happy miit ron7. There was just enough of committee to mkinluu it work as if it had been greased. Fourtlily, the baskets, boxes and fruniks were in such 11omber as to sat isfy all doubting Thoiases a. to the grub. Sol. Smith Russell's bill of fare, t from biled bacon down to g-o-o-s-e with sage and inguns, was not half so good. Sixthly, there were only four acci dents, and all of a minor character, viz: the cutting of a finger by a nice old lady who hadn't been to a pic nic in seven years; the miring up to her knees in -a jog.of a little.msi. (it was a fortu nate miss she did not go up to her neck ;) the pitching of one boy out of- one .swinkg; and anl ebony-colored darkey's team colliding with another swing;'and t the loss by a legal gentleman of a halfI smnokod digarette. t ,4 .Sent.hly,,rentembe.ying that it was !i union- affair, therre were Lutheran, e Baptist, Presbyterian, Episcopalian, As- t sociate Re6formed and Methodist chick ens fried, baked and broiled, w ithi pig, ~ munltton, beef and ham, and of the same pious persuasions were spread plain cake, silver cake, fruit cake, marbled cake. jelly cake, strawberry cake, C sponge cake, which needed precious little persuasion in the eating, with pies ad infinitum, tarts ditto, oodles cef straw- J berries and cream, boiled custard, and, and--heaps of other things, fixed up and dished up by the good sisteis of all i branches for the sumnptuous faring of I the little ones. Eighthly, never did boys and girls be- g have better, there was no pulling, crowding or overreachig; if there was a bad boy about he must have taken a tree. Ninthly, there was a total absence ofI exclusiveness, the baskets were in comn mon, open and free to aill, not the first bit of cod-fish-ocracy cropped out any where. Tlenlthly, we were in clover, being permitted to enter the jnner square, and peratmbulate and look aLnd admire the elegant, delicious feast which lay spread in most ap)petizing ahandon. Like the bee which gathers its swveetness from a hundred dliflerenit sources it was our pl)easure to flit-not flirt-here, there,t everywhere, and sip of this, that and a the other, taking the larger part in through the mind's Eye, anud not by thee commoner avenue down which so many of the good things of life are crowded out of sight. The memory of that feast and its pleasant dispensers is photo grap)hed oni our dliaphragmf or rather heart. But we must stop with eleventhly andl say that our thanks are dlue the Lutheran School for starting the affair. which p)rovedl so successful. Not a word more, reader, we are full. The Liatest Invention in Useful Household Articles. Within the last few years there has been expended a great deal of inventive thought and genius upon what may properly be class ed as household articles, the most noted re sults of which are the production of the sew ing machine, the.wiger, the washing ma chine, the carpet sweeper, &c. Almost every week we chronicle -he advent of some new invention by- which the cares and labors of housekeeping are lessened, and woman's work made easier. The newest thring to challenge our attention and glardden the heart of' the housekeeper, is, what is called thre NovELTY BRUSH HOLD ER, CARPET STRETeHLER and SwEEPER, a very simplle conmrivance designed to firmly hold in position any kind- of a brush or dust er; having anr extension handle that enables one to wush or dust windows, walls or ceil ings without the aid of a step ladder. That is oneC of its conveniences, and it is also one ctf the best carpet sweepers in the market, holding the bu1 sh firmly at an angle. ItS cleans the carpet thoroughly. raises no dust, and does not wear thne carpet like the ordina rv broom or brush, and will outwear a half dozen broomns. As a handle for the scrub bin~ -l,ru~:h it is the best device ever mlaie, no more kneeling on the floor, no more back aches or sore tingers. As a carpet s:retchxer alone it is worth its cost, as a earlier of any size can be laid even ly without any, of the labor and vexationl usually attending such work. It is strong, sim ple, thoroughly miade, cannot get our of order, has.n screws, lever or hinges. is corn pact, cheap andi durable.
