"Helen's Babies." This work is acknowledged to be the best selling article in our bookstores. Druggists, owever, say that Dr. Bull's Baby Syrup sells better than any other med icine. It is perfectly harmless and always reliable. Price 25 cents a bottle. A Rome journal explains to its sub scribers why it can be had cheaper by yearly than by quarterly subscription, as follows: "In repeatedly going to the ofice to subscribe,1 you may meet a friend.not only in search of a match, but of a cigar and glass of "say it your self;" you may rub up against t'vo or three beggars; you may get wet on a rainy day, or on a hot day fall in with hydrophobic dogs not led by appropri ate little strings; while by taking a full year's subscription all such possible ex penses will certainly be avoided." Still if any one insists on taking the HEA.w for the campaign or three months, we will not object. People are looking forward with de lightful anticipations to the fall, when the abundant crops are gathered and money is plentiful. Economy is the order now and it is right, that is in so far as concerns such articles as can be done without. But it is unwise policy to deprive oneself of things which are essential to comfort, and especially when they can be had for a mere trifle. How pleasant it is to sit around a well ap pointed table with bright new crockery, china and glass-ware, and on the other hand how uncomfortable if the sets are cracked or composed of odd pieces, no tom f which are mahed. Sligh, of Walhalla, formerly of Newberry, had one of her toes cut off last Monday week by a horse stepping on it. Singular to relate two interesting lit te.children in this town stumped a nail each from one of their toes a few days ago. The population of New York is set down at one niillipn, and one of our boys lately returned from there egys hs is going back, and make one on the start of the next million. Newberry is too small for him. The roll call at some of the Sunday Schools last Sabbath showed a heavy percentage of absentees. In one school exactly half were absent. What makes it strange is that the day was one of the loveliest of the season. It is sa,fe to say that there would be a great deal more bread cast upon the waters than there is, if people were only sure it would be returned to them with ten per cent. interest. 'he Prospect for the Coming Crop not Quite as Good as at the Last Report-Too Much Rain-Too Much Hot Weather-Too Much Worms. -CHARLESTON, S. C., September 9, 1878. To the President and .Directors of the Charleston Cotton Exchange : GENTEMEN : Your commwittee begs Leave to report as follows, for the month of August, based on eighty re plies from thirty Oounties: The weather for first half of the nonth was excessively hot and dry, the latter half very wet indeed ; on the whole the weather was less favor able than last year. The crop is reported generally as aying fruited well, but owing to ex ~essive drought in July and heavy rains the past month, the plant has ~hedded very badly, estimates varying From slightly to 33 per cent., averag ing about 15 per cent. Included in said estimates is also the damage from rust,, which is at present considerable. Worms are reported only in one County and had done no damage so Picksing had commenced in every County, and will have become general by this date in all but a few Counties. The universal report is that cotton n sandy and light lands has suffered very much more than on stiff land, where the damage has been but light. Your obedient servants, IROpT. D. MUSE, Chairman, L. For summer fades and flowerets die, Though nature weep and angels sigh. Thus it ever is with earth and earth. ly things, fleeting, fleeting, evanescent as flickering moonbeams, capricious as the ever changing beauty of' an au, tumnal sunset. Yes, summer with all its beauty and happy associations, its joys and sorrows, its loves and friend. sbips,is passing away and yet it leaves us many precious memories, whose delicate chords to fancy's magic touch responsive vibrate 'hile sofdy rings the joy bells. Among the many hap. -py landmarks to which we fondly tu,rn are the recent services held iii the Presbyterian Chijrch of this village by Rev. T. L Brownlec and Rev. D. E, Frierson, D. D. Dr. Frierson visited our village and church at the courteous invitation of our highly esteewed pas tor, Mr. Brownlee, and their united efforts to lead souls to Jesus were sig nally blessed. Gently, tenderly, but with masterly hand did they portray the frailties of earth and the glories of Heaven, while with melting hearts and tear-dimmed eyes many were led to exclaim, Light in -the distance breaking I see, Jesus of Nazareth, lo! it is thee. Long may that glad, happy Sab bath be remembered as a golden era in many lives; may it be to us all g bright,'beautiful oa'sis in the world's Sahara. May we consecrate ourselves anew to the cause and service of the Great I Am, even the meek and lowly Nazarene, and thereby 'through the darkest storms and trials which beset our life path be enabled to say, Jesus let us cleave to thee, Thou our one thing neeeful be.
