The false ringbone is r an enlargement situated above the f middle of the bone. When very r large, it may cause lameness. As f a rule, however, it never gives m- i convenience to the animal. r The true ringbone is quite ano- a ther matter. There are two kinds 1 -the high and the low. It is call ed high when it involves the bone immediately above the joint. s Ringbone, whether high or low, , varies in size ; but the degree of c lameness does not depend upon the r size of the formation. An animal 1 may be very lame with but little deposit, and another may show but little lameness with a very large - ringbone. Very often the circle of the ring is defective, and the deposit appears only on one side of the limb, or on both sides, and none in front. When at the sides they do not cause the same degree of lameness as when in front. Ringbones are not the cause, but the result of disease, being the re sult of an inflammation originating in the bone. Shoulder Slip.-This is a sprain or laceration of the fibres of the a sninatus muscles, together with, probably, the abductor mnagnus and teres exturnus. The humorus, lacking the tension of these mus cles, rotates outward at every step a with unusual freedom. Pain is ex pressed in recent cases, and wast- tI ing of the muscles just named. In a the majority of cases actual lame ness does not occur. There will a be a hollow space upon either sides of the scapular spine, extending 4s a whole length. Shoulder Lameness.-The gait of should.er lameness is indicativee of the seat of disease. The patient does not carry his limb straight forward, but with a rotary motion, a the limb being thrown outwards, e and the toe made to form the seg ment of a circle; in other words, he brings the leg f>rward, with a sort of sweep, and the toe is drag- 'I ged or trailed on the ground. In shoulder or knee lameness, the signs of pain are more discern- - ible during the elevation of the foot C from the~ground; whereas, in. foot and other diseases below the knee, the converse is the rule. Stringhalt. - An involuntary, convulsive motion of the muscles of one or both hind legs. Speedy .cat is the .name of an a injury to the knee. It is inflicted 0 by the horse striking his knee with .e the opposite foot. The symptoms are inflammation and swelling of the skin, collection of fluid in the sub-cutaneous areoler tissue, con-a stituting a serious abscess. Seedy Toe.-This term is ap plied to a perverted secretion of h horn at the lower margin of the N ospedis (lower bone of the foot,) by which the crust becomes detach- ~ ed from the horny laminar. Thorough Pin.-Thorough pin is a bursal enlargement situated on - the lower part of the thigh and ~ upper and b>ack part of the hock. Thrush.-A discharge of foetid material from the frog. I Spavin.-A violent twisting or straining of the soft parts around the joints. According to the de gree of the sprain, the fibrous parts of the joint may be simply stretch ed, or they may be ruptured. The symptoms are swelling around the sprained part, attended by lame ness. Sprain of the Metacarpi Inter nus.-This is visible over the tra pexiumn on the inner and lower part f of the knee. Sprain of the Metacarpi Exten sor ~Magnus.-Indicated by a swelling in front of the knee and above it. Sprain of the Metacarpi Exter nus.-This is made visible by an enlargement on the outside of the2 knee, over the small metacarpal con dyic. Sprain of the radical Ligaments -Is manifested by lameness, a difficulty in flexing the knee, with swelling, heat and tenderness im mediately above the knee. Wounds.-A wound made witl clean-cutting instrument is ai ncised wound. A wound inflicte >y some blunt object, without per orating the skin, is a contusei vound. When the skin is divide md torn, with ragged, uneve dges, it is called a lacerate vound.-Chicago Field. The Commissioner of Agriculture, in hi report for the year 1875, speaks as follows: "There can be no doubt of the genert adulteration of all malt liquors. In Englan and other countries, where heavy penaltie are imposed, and an increasing vigilanc practiced to detect and punish such fraud: by a system,~of inspection of all malt liquor manufactured before exposed to sale, th practice is very common. How much mor in this country, where there are no laws o the subject, and no officer to carefully ant lyze the products off the brewery? Somn years ago, Professor Mapes, of New Yorli analyzed the beer from a dozen differer breweries, and all were found adulterate with noxious substances. It is said that th sale of drugs to brewers is a profitable pai of the trade. This is perfectly infamou! Cocculus indicus, (fish-berry,) nux vomici (dog-button, from which strychnine is ol taned,) are some of the delectable substance found in beer! These are potent poisoni and the brewver found using them should b drowned at once in one of his own vat! The British Parliament passed a law to pr< vent this nefarious business. The followin is an extract: 'No druggist, vender of c dealer in drugs, or chemist, or any othe person, shall sell or deliver to any license brewer, dealer in or retailer of beer, knowin them to be such, or shall sell or deliver t any person on account of, or in trust for, an; such brewer, dealer or retailer, any liquc called by the name of or sold for coloring from whatever material the same may b made; or any material or preparation othec than unground brown malt, for the darket ing the color of worts beer, or any molasses vitriol, honey, quassia, coccolus indicus grains of paradise, Guinea pepper, or opium or any extract or preparation of molasses, o any article or preparation to be used in wort beer for or as a substitute for malt or hops and if any druggist shall offend in any of thes particulars, such preparation, &c., shall b forfeited, and may be seized by any officer c excise, and the person so offending shall foi feit five hundred pounds.' "Under this law, very many druggists ani brewers were brought to grief, and yet th practice continues. Unless the Americal public are ready to admit the immaculat purity and innocence of American breweri they must be content, while drinking thei beer, to cherish the belief that they are at th same time guzzling some narcotic poison o damaging medicine. In view of the unpr< cedented growth of the barley crop; of th great increase of the number of maisters an, brewers; of the vast unknown quantities c beer that are drunk in every city and almos every :.own on the continent, it is the dictat of sound wisdom that the attention of legih lators should be called to the subject of th adlteration of our malt liquors, and sever penaltes should be inflicted as a preventive.
