The habitual -daily use of this vegetablc is much more beneficial to man than must people are aware of. A writer, who is familiar with its virtues, says :-"I have known many men arid women, who, from various causes, had become so much affected by nervousness that when they stretched out their hands they shook like aspen leaves in a windy day, and by a moderate daily use of the blanched footstalks of celery as a salad they become as strong and steady in hmb as other people. I have known others so nervous that the least annoyance put them in a state of agitation, and they were in a constant state of perplexity and fear, who were also effectually cured by a moderate daily use of blanched celery as u salad at meal time. I have known others to be cured of palpitation of the heart. Everybody engaged in labor \Yeakening to the nervEs sh.uld use celery daily in the sea son, and onions in its stead when not in season." To this we may add that a prominent New York druggist dravws ia winter from his soda fountain a hot extract of cel ery, mixed with Liebig's meat ex tract, under the niame of ox-celery. It is a nourishing drink at lunch time, far better than coffee or tea, and is doing a great deal in this neighborhood to promote temper ance. We give celery almost daily to our canary birds, and it cures them of fits; they are little animals, with very delicate nerves, easilf frightened, and therefore they need such a remedy very much, and the relish with which they eat it is c proof that their instinct guidos them to eat what is good for them. A manufacturer of perfumery of our acquaintance some years ago commenced to prepare an extract of celery seed, put up in bottles, and intended to give stren gth to the old or exhausted persons, who, by over-indulgences, have reached such a state as to require restora tives.-Journal of Chemistry. DESTROYING FIELD MICE.-The best way to reduce the number of field mice is to place a few shocks of cornstalks in different parts of' the field, and in each sheaf put a few nubbins of corn. After a few days turn the shocks over, or take the shieaves apart, and let cats or dogs kill the little marauders, or despatch them with brush whips. A successful farmer in the. West when relating his mode of destroy ing these field pests, says :-I go through my orchard and nursery and throw down on -the ground some three or four piles of brush to the 100 trees. This I cover with some h:ay or straw ; place on the brush a few ears of corn. In few weeks the mice will gather mn the piles of hay an imake their nests and rear their young. Then if you have a good dog take a fork and lift the pile to mel side and destroy all you can. If you have no dog, take some corn meal and crackers and mix a little strych nine with it, and enclose this in a small box with a few augur holes bored in, and bury this beneath the brush. The mice will eat it and all die. This is an effectual remedy, but care must be taken in using the strychnine. CHA PPED HAN Ds.-The casiest a.nd simplest remedy is. found in every one's kitchen closet, and is nothing more than common starch. Reduce it to an impalpable powder, put in a muslin bag, keep it in the table drawer. Whenever you SAVE Ey ERYTHING.--Frmcrs in general miss a large part of the profits that might be made from feeding pork, by not paying at tention to the making of manure from the hogs. For corn, a vari ety of experiments have convinced , us there is no manure that can be compared with that of the hog and the farmer who permits any I of this to be wasted, or does not a give the animal an opportunity of c )nverting as mtucil mold, vegeta- h bE matter, etc., into manure as I can be done, is a great loser in the eind. Some able fhrners have es- 1 timated that the ma nurc made by a lot of hogs, where the proper materials are provided, will fully pay the expenses of feeding ; but there is no doubt., if they do not do this. they will, by fermenting c the most enriching compost for 1 crops, add essentially to the ulti mate profits of the farm. The recipe is fur- c nished by a correspondent of the Courier-Journal, who writes as fol c lows Last summer our hen-house was e so infested with this vermin that - the setting hens died on their I nests. One afternoon I noticed the martins carrying to their box, which was on a pole above the hennery, some green leaves. Watching them, I found they _ were getting the leaves of the male persimmon. I gathered some of the leaves, threw them ] into the nests and on the hen c. house floor, and in less than one T hour the house was free from ver ruin. To boil the leaves, and u sprinkle with the decoction, will s be as effective. - - - -+ - --- ' IAsu SALAn.-Take of r-ed beets, carrots, sweet potatoes, ' trish p)otattoes and string beans i pint, after being boiled and cut s up about the size of peas. ThenP add 2 pickled cucumbers and 2 stalks of celery, cut up the same size; 1 onion chopped very fine. and 1 pint can of green peas. Mix all these ingredients wvell, F without breaking; add nearly a. teaspoonful of salt, and moisten all well with salad oil and vine gar, in equal parts in which has been well dissolved i teaspoonful of mustard. Garnish with light lettuce leaves and hard boiled eggs cut in quarters or rings. The following is said to be a good remedy for deafness: Drop three or four drops of glycerine in the car before retiring at night; in the morning syringe the ear with warm water, and continue this practice faithfully for some time. The deafness and singing often result from a collection of wax on the tymnpanum or drum of the car, and the glycerine has the effect to loosen it, while the water removes it. I have known this experimeut to be successfully tried on persons5 eighty years old. when the hearing would naturally be very imperfect. Experiments recently made in different parts of the wvorld, have demonstrated that concussion of.1 the air will drive insects from gardens, orchards and vineyards. This theory is of American origin,1 and, we believe, was first conceived by an.intelligent Southern gentle. man. Firing guns near fruit trees, about grape vines, etc., produces the result mentioned. This is a cheap and convenient method of deliverance from the innumerable insects that make war upon the interests of the human family. In the summer it is a good plan to let the fowls roost in the trees instead of in small and badly ven tilated coops. They will be bar (ier and healthier for it, and far less liable to be infected with lice. Chickens. especially, as soon as left by the hen, should be encour aged to roost in the trees. They may be allowed to remain out un til ice begins to form in the cool weather. It is very rare that fo wls thbus raised are troubled with crup, or snufiles, or get their comb and wattles frozen.
