This child, notwithstanding his youthful years, ex hibited a wonderful intelligence, his brightness, though, was only excelled by his sweet disposition, and although he has gone to the place prepared for him among the angels, he will not be for gotten by those who remember with pleasure his sweet innocent face The blow becomes especially hard on the fond parents, and although it is a con solation to know. that he is now with the celestial band singing hosannas to the Most High, yet the loss falls heavily upon them, and the sympathies of the entire community are with them in this their sad bereavement. See card of F. Werber, Jr., Deputy Sur veyor. . 33-6m. Hampton and Simpson.on Thursday. Come all and show by your presence that you are in favor of honest govern ment. MR. L. C. MooRE.-This popular gentleman was elected Ensign of the Rifle Club at the last meeting. No better man could be found for the posi tion, as he will always stick to his col ors. The name of Col. P. W. Ball was in advertently left out in the list of speak ers expected to be present here on Thursday. Col. Ball is the nomi nee for Solicitor of this Judicial Dis trict, and appears before his constituen cy here for the first time on Thursday. Conhe out all and hear him. We acknowledge with pleasure re ceiving a copy of the Mineral Map and General Statistics of New South Wales, Australia, sent us with the compliments of the Commissioners, from the Main Building, Philadelphia. It is a highly interesting paper, giving much informa tion in regard to that wonderful and at present little known country. Don't forget to come in on Thursday. S We acknowledge receipt of a neatly printed Catalogue of the Rules, Regu lations and Schedule of Premiums of the Fourth Annual Fair of the Green ville Agricultural and Mechanical As sociation; which commences on the 17th of October. It is fromi the press of Messrs. J. C. & E. Bailey, of Greenville, and is a creditable specimen of work. Ever since the time of Adam and Eve, people-especially ladies-have tried to get their garments as cheap as possible. From the primitive fig leaves to the present heavy silk, economy has been the great disideratum of dress purchasing ladies.7 Many are in doubt when to purchase, where to purchase, and how.to purchase. The answer is, "MeOreery, Love & Co., of Columbia," where the latest style and finest dress pattern can be obtained at a minimum price. See advertisement. 1t. All who can should come on horse back on Thursday. One of the most interesting places to a lady, and particularly if she be a housekeeper, is a first celass China and Crockery store, where everything that she possibly needs can be found. At Messrs. Kingsland & Heath's, Colunm bia, and right under the Columbia Hotel, is the place that we would call attention to. Every want in this line can there be supplied at most reasona ble prices, and the lady visitor will be surprised to find there many indispensa ble articles never before dreamed of in her experience. tf The Democratic Club known as the old men's club met on Monday night of last week in Temperance Hall. One colored man joined, making eight col ored men who have joined so far. Speeches were made by several, among them three colored men, who gave their views on the present issne. Their speeches 'were very sensible, and lis tened to attentively and with interest by the Club. ThesClub has decided to meet every Tuesday night until the present campaign is over. The work goes bravely on; every one is aroused to the vital questions at stake, and next November Township No. 1 won't be behind in polling a large vote for Tilden and Hampton. ROSEMONr CEMETERY.-We are re joiced at the improvements lately made in Rosemont Cemetery. In addition to the neat and convenient summer house, the vacant lots and~walks have been cleaned of the rank grass and noxious weeds which so long marred the beauty of this silent city of our dead. We know that the gentlemen w~ho have the Cemetery in charge laave r,n ~tneeure in it, and that they THE MAss MEETING.-Do not forget the mass meeting ordered by the Coun ty Executive Committee for-Thursday. Every man is expected t6 do his duty in this campaign, -and the duty now is to obey orders and promptly rendezvous at the Court House. Gen. Hampton, Col. Simpson and others will address the meeting. At night there will be a torchlight procession. The amount of corn consumed in this County would astound those unacquaint ed with the figures. Below we give the number of bushels of Corn and meal received at this depot from the 1st of January to the 1st of September. We are indebted to Mr. Jno. A. Kinard, the polite and efficient loading clerk at the depot for the exact figures: Amount of Corn, . - ~50,448 bushels Amount of Meal, - - 19,439 " Making a grand total of sixty-nine thousand eight hundred and eighty-six bushels consumed in eight months. - TENAcIOuS OF HiS HoxoR.-One of the hardest and trickiest specimens of colored humanity was approached the other day by a Democratic negro and asked to join in the good cause. Feel ing at the place where his collar ought to have been, and putting on an amount of dignity amusing to look at, he an swered, "No, sir, it would disgrace me foreber; my wife would be disgraced, my fader and moder, grandfader, grand moder, children and grandchildren. No, sir, Ise an honest republican." There is not a greater rogue in New berry County. Remember!! Hampton on Thursday. PERSONAL.-Mr. James M. Morris, representative of the celebrated Morris Gin of Columbia, who .has been for some time canvasslng Newberry and other counties in the interest of his gins, paid us a visit on Thursday last. An advertisement of this popular gin can always be found in the HERALD at the proper seasons. If any one has a gin in need of repairs, or desires a new one, let this house know it. Mr. Thos. F. Harmon returned on Thursday from the Northern markets with invoices of a large stock of goods, many of which are already in., Like all others who have 'done' the Centen nial, he thinks it the biggest thing of the season. He has our thanks for late papers. _ _ _ Deservedly Popular-We mean Dr. Bull's egetable Pills, for everybody has derived much benefit from their use. Physicians re commend them. On Friday last the Radical Convention et to nominate delegates to the State, Congrsional and Judicial Conventions to be held in Columbia this week. These meetings are of very little interest to the white people of the County; they are all conducted in the same'manner, log-rolling and manipulations by the different factions- generally constitute the substance of their transactions. Both sides crave office and go to these meetings for that purpose, and not to work out the redemption of their fast failing party. The meeting was held in the Court House, with S. S. Bridges, coloi-ed, in the chair. The two factions were led respectively by Corwin and Leahy on one side, and Boston and Scott on the other. The proceedings resultfed iii a complete victory for Corwin -and his followers; all the delegates chosen are his men, and die other party is left out in the cold, The proceedings were o~red withlittle exception, the Chairman pre sided very well and seermed fipartial in his rulings, The whole convention seemed to ~be unanimous in favor of Chamberlain for Governor, and Purvis for Congressman, and so instructed their delegates to vote. Scott made a very strong -speech against the white men in the Radical party, arraigning them for using the colored people for their personal advan tage. But it was of no avail, the mem bers of the convention were drilled and stuck to Corwin and Leahy through thik and thin. After the election-ef delegates was through with, Leahy arose and in a long speech introduced a reso lution instructing the delegates. to the Judicial Convention to vote for Maj. J. M. Baxter for Solicitor. Leahy said that he offered Maj. Bax ter's name to the convention, knowing him to be a Democrat, but believing him to be an honest and upright man, and capable of filling the office of So licitor with justice to that position. Scott then got up and made a telling speech against the other faction, but said he was in favor of having Maj. Baxter for Solicitor, as he would do jus tice to all in that important position, Boston followed in a short speech; he would be willing to have some of the offices given to the honest Democrats, so that if anything went wrong they could come in for their share of the blame. A resolution wats then offered that a committee be appointed to wait on Maj. Baxter and see if he would allow his name to be used. The committee went out, and after having seen Maj. Baxter, reported that he declined to come before the onvention~ and woull have nothing to do with the canvass. Resolutions were then introduced in= structing the delegates to the different conventions to vote for ChpnberWn fo Governor aid Purvis for Congressman. During the nomination of dlegates, the proceedings were rather uproarious, but on the whole were orey. h following delegates were elected to th Stnat Connention; HI. C. Corin - There is a probability that Gen.. Gor-, don, Georgia's hero, will beliee o Thursday with Hampton. The pros pect of seeing and hearing Gen. G6r' don ought to induce every one to come out. A CuRIosrrY.-The fine large Banana tree which occupies a prominent posi tion in the front garden of our towns man, Mr. J. N. Martin, about two weeks ago put out a bloom, which since has been curiously developing in fruit. The I bunch with its little green bananas is a cnriosity in this section, as it -has been supposed heretofore that this native of the tropics, although growing here luxuriantly, would not fruit. It is -scarcely hoped that the fruit will come to perfection ere frost will make it ne cessary to top. the tree and place it undei' cover. ABOUT THE TOWN AND COUNTY. - The weather continues warm, And politics if anything is warmer. The scenes in the. Court House on the occasion of the Republican conven tion last Wednesday eclipsed Pandemo nium. A hard working Democrat became disgusted because a negro who pro mised to stick to him was suspiciously prominent at the nominating conven tion. We advise him to be prepared for such things. The negro is uncer tain. Fodder is down to fiftycentsa hundred -and the colored men do not as yet see the cause of it. If they did they would vote a Democratic ticket.- It is the onl salvation of the country. All kinds of buginess is dnll, in short there is nothing doing-and why? A corrupt government is the sole cause. Every white man in the County should be up and doing. Every man who lags behind aids and abets the enemy. Very few of the merchants have as yet gone North. New goods arrive slowly. A few 'boxes have been re ceived at Harmon# st". And some new stationery and fancy goods have been received at the-Herald Bookstore, among which are the pret tiest designs in note paper ever brought to this market. The "Gem," "La Grande," "Morning Star," -"Little Pets," "Little- Princess," are exquisite, the boxes alone being worth the price asked. Call soon and get a bupply. Subscribers in arrears are requested to come in and settle; the way we want money is startling. If it does not come soon something desperate will be the consequence. A good rain fell in this~immediate section on Wednesday night, and an immense amount of good will results from it. Newberry should ' be the banner county of the State. Go to making them at once for Thursday. Let every one hold aloft on that occasion a:banner with appropriate inscriptions. Accounts reach us of the big mass meeting over in Edgefield. May ours be as successfnl, which it surely will be if every white man resolves to come out and do his part. The best straightout lesson that oould be given-the Radical meeting on Wed nesday. Making little negro boys fight seems to be the chief amusement now-a-daysi The rain on Sunday was quite refresh m g. - Some gorgeous transparencies are being gotten up for Thursday. Attention is called to the account of the row in Charleston. If anybody neds protection down South it is the~ colored Democrat. Capt. A.?P. Pifer has returned from his trip to Virginia., We hear that the County Convention. of the Radical party will be held soon to nominate a straightout Radical tick et. We could very well dispense with that meeting this year. Evey one should stay and-seeThe torchlight procession on Thursday nigjht. The colored- people are wa|ip, and it will be impossible to keep the "party" together as closely as hereto for. The Y. M[. D. C. met on Monday night. There was a large attendaice ad an enthusiastic meeting. Attention is called to the orders of Chief Marshal for Thursday. Nearly thirty bales of new cotton were sold on Saturday. The Republican vote in this County will be split up between the two-factions of that party. Every one solid for Hampton anrd Happiness. The torchlight procession on Tburs day will be the grandest pageant ever witnessed in Newberry. About fifty bales of new cotton so far have been brought to this market. Business i.s reViving at the lower end of Law Range-the town cart being en gaged in hauling in more clay. Wonder if the Commissioners of Roas ny giving any tilought to tliy condition of the public roads. Now is the time, you kno;w, to fill up holes. New cotton cormes in slowly and buyers are on the qui vive. It does one good to see how quickly a new bale is gobbled up. We have been running on wind since April. What holds all the snuff in the world? No one -nose. The fellow who found this ont is up to snuff. Our streets are beginning to present a lively -appearance-on Friday and Saturday there was quite a stir. On Thursday there will be another stir, but it will be of a different charac ter. On that occasion the souls of men will be stirred by a Democratic demon stration. Souls that are in arms and eager for the fray. The authorities at the War Depart ment in Washington explicitly contra dict the unpleasant rumor that 20,000 stands of arms had been sent to South Carolina, adding that not a single gun should be sent to South Carolina, unless a United States soldier was also sent to carry it.-Columbia Register.
