The hihet.prnill be paid for it in any quantities. 39-tf. Mr. M.;Foot we are pleased to see al home again, and ahnost entirely recov ered from his la s ei-ious attack of sick ness. The pleasantest thing about it is that he is prepared to do a large amount of good to our citizens, in distributing a superior assortment of merchandise, in return for which he only requires a small cash equivalent. This thing oj asking big prices, he says, is all vanity and vexation of spirit-his motto being cheap for cashi. We don't know whether th4 3Iajor is anything of a sinner or not, bu charity covers a multitude, the goo< book says. ____ MAL.E ACADEM.-Mr. R. H. Clark son announces in this week's paper tha the exercises of the Academy will b resumed on the 19th inst. This gentle man, we are pleased to say, comes t< Newberry highly recommended as: preeeptor of youth, his attainments ani long experience fully qualifying hin for the responsidle position he is abou to assume. The youth of town an conywodsr ntrn o h e cont wh desred etering fry the se C.isonare doeished tb readya. M e a aM in be a minute man. MaF, CnIuRoHm--The bells of nearly all the churches sounded out on Sunday --there being service in the Lutheran, Presbyterian, Methodist and Baptist, by their respective pastors. The young people's missionary society meeting on Sunday afternoon in the Methodist Church was highly interesting. In the Presbyterian Church a pro tracted religious service was com menced on Wednesday night last and terminated on Sunday night. This was preparatory to the Communion service. The exercises were well attended. The pastor, Rev. R. A. Fair, was assisted by his son, the Rev. J. Y. Fair. Do not use inferior paper when you write, but call at HEALD Book Store and get Pirie's best note, finest commer cial note, octavo note, together with Repp, Initial and various other kinds of papers. 41-tf NTERESTING.-The large and showy advertisement of Messrs. McFall & Pool in this week's paper will attract general attention. These gentlemen have decidedly a most handsome and elegant stock of Dry Goods, Cassimeres, Carpets, Millinery, &c., and a visit to their store must certainly result in satis faction. Taking into consideration the low price of cotton and scarcity of ioney, they are determined to sell at such prices as will suit the pockets of a needy people. The taste heretofore displayed in the selection of stock has again been carried out, and the result can be seen by visiting them. PHIFER'S SHOE AND CLOTHING - STORE. Positively the largest stock of extra fine HATS ever brought to Newber ry. 39-tf RLAwAY.-The blind mare belong ing to Benson M. Jones, Esq., made a furious dash from Mrs. Mower's corner to the opposite one of Mr. Phifer's, on Monday, striking the brick wall under the, elephant sign square and solid. Buggy and horse then rolled into the ditch near,.the former smashed into a hundred pieces. the latter badly dam aged. Luckily there was no one in the way during the quick, mad run of the frightened animal, or perhaps a life would- have been lost. It is said the fright was occasioned by the colored driver slapping the -animal with the lines. Fortunately again, the young - dies who have lately been driving the mare were not in the buggy on this oc casion. Mf ssns. KINGSLAND & HEATH, pro prietors of the popular House-furnishing establishment situated under the Col umbia Hotel, in the city of Columbia, are now daily in receipt of new goods in their line from the Northdrn markets, and their stock of China, Glass, Wood, Tin and Iron Ware is the completest ever brought to the city. In the fancy line, also, they have a superb assort . ment. Housekeepers and seekers of ar ticles in the ornamental line are advised to give them a call. 37-tf. ABOUT THE TowN~ AND COUNTY. Summer set in again on Tuesday1last. Newberry is' as lively as the most sanguine could wish. Newberry is rising, a perambulating boot black is the latest sensation. Dr. John R. Thompson can now ex tract teeth with pleasure to his patients. He has immortalized himself. New goods roll in from the depot all day long, and 'wagons roll out heavily laden to all parts of the country. The returned white excursionists don'l say much about their experience. Per. haps they did not realize greatly. Lately Newberry was without a sin gle fresh cracker, now every store in town is supplied, and in great variety. Fodder seems to be scarce-there is none offered for sale. Butter and sweet potatoes are also it~ great domand. Bring them in farmers if you have to spare. Wood should be brought in now whilE the weat;her is pleasant and roads dry A few loads wanted at this office. Dr. Fant's Drug Store looks as brighi as a new dollar. It has been paintei throughout and otherwise improved. Sore throat prevails extensively it town and county-and colds are com mon-otherwise there is not much sick ness. Looked in on R. F. Phifer, Saturday, and found him crowded by trade Cheap goods and advertising is what is the matter. Never saw the like before. The cheerful whistle of the Laurent train is now heard reverberating ovei Newberry's hills, and Col. Peake is in, spired and is pushing for the end of the ine. rosng has as yet been done on th rasleading to the Court House, anc it will soon be too late, Newberry would do better without a Board o: Commissioners. The new clothing store on the corne1 of Caldwell and Friend streets is very neatly fitted up, and is full of superio1 wearing apparel. Everybody in New berry can be clothed cheaply. Please allow us to reiterate-do nol send your Job Printing abroad. It car be done as neatly, cheaply and expedi. rtiously at this office as at any other Call and examine specimens of work. Mr. Thos. Neel, living on Bush river we regret to learn, lost that valuable and handsome grey horse, so well knowr in this County, on Wednesday last. 11 was valued at $300. Cause of deati Sunknown. The Newberry cotton buyers are : festive set of fellows. They are up witi the sun and a bag of cotton excites live ly rivalry before breakfast. Going t< Imarket for a supply of Centennial bee the other morning at day dawn 'we saw the entire battalion out and eager foi -the fray. Speaking of Centennial beef the hop4 is indulged that nearly all of the oldes -and poorest cows are extinct, and the butchers will be forced to turn their at tention to the young cattle.. Good. The Baltimore Corner barbers sa: Sthey will not attend the CJentennia 1while there is a white nose in Newber try to pull. They are entitled to con sideration. Justice was not done in last issue ti some of the turnip exhibitors-we learn that Maj. L. J. Jones hung up the larg est. and young Charlie Dvlaybin was no far behind. We are di.sposea.to render unto C.esur. &c. Mosqui:os are now in the zenith of their glory-but their time is nearly over. Fleas,.too, are friskier than ever and are n thi'ck as iops-and they hop, oh dear. R ats, too, are very numerous -dwellings and outhouses are infested with them. A fr;enl in need is a friend indeed, and we heartily acknowledge the assist ance affor;ed us by Mr. D. B. Wheeler, of the big dry goods house over the way, in getting our prfss righted. We hope his store will be crowded with customer- from now out. * An enterprising rising.maxi is Speck -he has opened a first class' restaurant in rear of his confdionery, and will, serve up substantials and-.. delicacies in best style. With or without iTh appe tite go tiere' and call,: for something good. The indefatigabl" lexander will serve you satisfacto -.Ir A fine specimen of rice was exhibit ed on Monday in front.of Wright & Coppock's store, planted and grown by Mr. Junius E. Chapman, one of the proprietors under the . crooked sign. Judging by the sample an acre might produce about 75 bushels. It is upland rice and shows conclusively what can be done if an effort be made. BEwxni-:RING.-The visitor to the store of Messrs. Perry & Slawson. is in danger of having his wits go on a wool gathering expedition, so, extensive is the display of stock which fill -counters, shelves and show cases, in segars, to bacco, pipes, canes and a hundlred other fancies 'for gentlemen, and these are not all the causes which are calculated to lead to a slight wande'ring of the fancy, as the entire arrangement and design of the store is in-the most elab orate style of art. 'It is decidedly one of the neatest and most' perfectly fin ished stores in the city of Columbia. Should the visitor be affected, we gladly state that an antidote can be at once had in any of the numerous choice brands of their segars, a few puffs. from one of which' will immediately restore him to his former condition, the reaction of which will be so pleasant that an in vestment will be at once made in a whole- box. These gentlemen do be sides a large wholes;Lle business,. and the tmade are invited to send orders. Remember the place-on6 door, below J. C. Dial, Columbia, ?. C. 37-tf.
