The con gregations generally have been bprge and earnestly attentive, while many have professed conversion and quite a number of accessions have been made to the Church. Dr. Pierce, the Evan gelist, who conducts these meetings, has succeeded in the happiest manner in gaining the sympathy of his bearers and there is an earnest promise that his labors will result in great good to the community. CHArJXMNO! ILUSTRATM).-Thiq is the title of a new and handsome paper covered book-of 240 pages, fqr copies of which we are indebted to Messrs. Walk er, Evans & Cogswell, of Charleston, who are the publishers. It is finely printed, is embellished with nearly one hundred illustrations of the principal houses.of Charleston, and is altogether quite interesting. It has been gotten up for free distribution at the expense of the merchants of that city. Several copies uncalled for are on hand at this office. SAD AFmCTION.-In our last issue we toticed the death of Mr. Drayton Chandler's child from Diptheria. On Saturday last, another interesting little child was laid beside the first, andwhile the father was still at the grave of this one he was hastily summoned home to catch the last and dying whisper of his oldest daughter, Emma. All three died of Diptheria and within one week. This is the saddest dispensation which has been experienced in this County in years, and deeply do we sympathise with the bereaved parents. One other, and the only child left, lies dangerously Il of the same fataf disease. COLUMMA CLOTING HOUSE.-The advertisement in this issue from the clothing house of Messrs. R. & W. C. Swaffield is worthy attention. The fall and winter stock now in store is very full. These gentlemen are ex perienced clothiers and keep none but the best goods, the most of which have been made up by themselves. C., Sep. 16,1875. 38-2 .A box was. received at this oie a few days ago, weighing ten pounds, upon which the freight from Columbia to Newberry was the extraordinary low sum of four cents. It came from New York. We were startled out of the usual equanimity of editorial life. "Four cents!" "Yes," said the drayman; "but not having the requisite change I had to hand the freight agent a whole nickle." "Well, and what is the dray age?" asked we, "Only ten cents." It was out of proportion-four cents for forty-seven miles by rail, and ten cents for a quarter of a mile by mule. Well, we paid it, and lost one cent by the drayman not having change. We thought it was all, till the collecting agent of the Wilmington road brought in his bill for seven cents-this was fronw New York to Columbia. It was right, no doubt, but somuchiunder the usual tariff that it was no wonder we were thrown out of balance. Eleven cents from New York on 10 lbs. of freight may well be compared with the Express charge of $5 per hundred. Commend us to Express Co.'s by all means. BwEEN.-The visitor to the store of Messrs. It will be seen that our mer chants are prepared for the Fall trade, which is now opening so hopefully, and that they present attractions not only in quantity and quality of goods, but in prices. They realize the fact that the best way to make trade is to have the best of goods, to sell at living prices, and to ADVERTISE. Messrs. Wheeler & Co., late Lovelace & Wheeler, have in store a stock which for variety, excellence and price cannot be excelled, and all that is asked is an examination. The clothing house of-Messrs. Wright & Coppock is better stocked than ever before.~ The*display of gentlemen's and youth's suits is very large and in great variety of fabric and style. Besides this they warrant all of their goods. They have bats, caps, shoes, under garments, &c., of superior qualities, and their brogans for farm use cannot be surpassed. At Capt. J. F. Speck's establishment a bewildering effect is produced on the beholder. Never was there such a dis play of handsome articles in Jewelry, Silverware and Fancy Goods shown before. A visit to his handsome store and a view of the novelties will pay. Mr. J. D.- Cash's large emporium is ali ablaze. His stock of Dry Goods of every kind and quality, together with his superb assortment of piece goods for gentlemen cannot be excelled any where. In addition to these he can show a line of ladies and gents' shoes of finest material and styl, or anything that may be called for. The special notices of Mr. R. F. Phifer speak for themselves, still we invite attention to the' inducements which he offers. His large and ele gantly arranged store is filled with such a stock of Boots, Shoes, Hats, Clothing, &c., as cannot fail to give the largest amount of satisfaction. Dr. S. F. Fant, the popular druggist, on the corner, makes a corner on Lamps this week. He has a su rior stock of all patterns, sizes and eapest prices, not to mention an elegent variety toildt ornaments. He says in his 124 "Let there be light," and the object of this notice is throw light on the subject, Messrs. Jno. Scott & Co. open their door this week and offer a superior stock of clothing for gentlemen, together with a fine assortment of piece goods, which will be made up to order in satisfactory style. The opening of Dry Goods in front and Millinery and Fancy Goods in the rear by McFall & Pool, is attractive in the extreme.- The usual taste in pur hasing has been displayed, and we can confidently guarantee satisfaction.
