THE PLA~CE.-Under the Columbia Hotel,'on Main street, Columbia, at the People's Store of Messrs. Kingsland & Heath, seekers of Christmas and New -Year's fancies cannot fail to be pleased. The articles kept by them are legion, for there are to be found all things un der the sun. Besides fancies, they are in full supply of all useful and neces sairy articles in China, Crockery, Tin and Woodenware, &c. f>1-tf. It is reported that Col. Dodamiead has resigned his po)sition on1 the Greenville & Columbia Rt. R., and has accepted the Superintendency of the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad. Col. H. T. Peake, iL is said, will succeed him on the Greenville Railroad. If the report be true that the former has resigned, we are gratified that a gentleman so favor ably known is spoken of as his succes sor. We know of no man better quali fled for the position than Col. Peake. In this event the work of irebuilding the Laurens road must fall to other hands, and we trust it will suffer no detriment. It was his firsl ride by rail and he pronounces it firsl rate, and a real nice Christmas, you bet. SAD.-The clerks of one of the large business houses of this town were turn ed loose on Thnrsday night last, and to a man they marched up to the book keeper's desk singing "shake not thy GoREE locks" at us until our furlough is out. Early next morning the GIFFIN of the establishment could nowhere be found, and it was decided to HUNT the bird up, so DAVIDS ox a cream colored horse took the lead, JoHN SToNE fol lowing hard after. The excitement be came so intense that had not a GooD MA- of the party explained the matter to the people, the whole of them would have been done BpowN. So much for taking-Christmas. We are glad to say that HARMON-y now prevails. and that calico and bacon, homespuns and sugars, ribbons and molasses, cotton ties and grist, together with many other articles, can still be had under the HERALD Book Store. CITSTMAS WEEK.-All things con sidered a pleasanter Christmas has not been experienced in the memory of the oldest inhabitant, and with the excep tion of a colored man wounded at a hot supper by another of the same color, nothing has happened to interrupt the happy current of affairs. The delight ful weather which lasted until Friday night, and which enabled everybody to pedestrianize with comfort and make the thousands of purchases necessary to conduce to the happiness of the season, was enjoyed to its full. We do not re collect ever having such an aninterrup ted spell of beautiful weather. Busi ness in consequence never was better, and some of the fancy goods' as well as heavy dealers, are nearly out of mate rial, and until they replenish will be at their wits ends to supply farther demand. Had the rainy season not set in on Fri day night, there is no telling how many merchants would have been bankrupt in stock, how many people bankrupt in pocket, or how many made happier than they are. As for the amusements, celebrations, dinners, suppers, parties, weddings, hristmas trees, &c., the list is too nu merous for mention in detail. We will briefly allude to a few, and first came The Masonic celebration of Amity Lodge. which embraced the dedication of their New Hall, by Grand Master Hoyt, of Anderson, the installation of officers, the supper, and we were about to say the Ball, but as that is a disputed point-although there was considerable dancing-we will simply call it a grand Terpsichorean close of the pleasant cele bration. which did not wind up till the better part of the night had fled. and the company arrived at the conclusion that they had had a most delightful time. A large amiount of the happi ness on the occasion was attributable to Mr. C. C. Chase's elegant supper. On this self-same night friend Mar shall spread himself and his tables, and many were made happy by the good things provided for them. The next morning, friend Scott, of post office fame, held a seance in which music "by the band," wit, by the com pany, wine and segars in profusion, by the genial host, were the order. Ah, these Christmas times, how warm and generous the hearts of all. Would that the season could last longer. The Christmas T r e e programme opened at Miss Gilder's school room. It was a very pretty tree there exhibit ed, handsomely decorated, profusely laden and beautifully lighted with wax tapers. Mr. 0. L. Schumpert dispensed. the presents to numerous little people, t the delight of a large number of big Christmas day the Beth Eden Luther an congregation made a fine display with their Sunday School tree. There was a long letter read by the pastoi from the Tree to the children, much beautiful singing, led by Prof. Hawkins, and then to the infinite delight of a crowded house, the hundreds of appro priate presents were distributed. Messrs. Antoine Buzhardt and J. Brown had the felicity of taking down the presents. and we are satisfied it was warm worn by the way in which they perspired the atmosphere being very close in con sequence of the exclusion of air ani light, the burning tapers, chandeliers and the roaring stoves-we did not en v either of them. The Rev. Pastoi Shirey read the names, while Capt. Aul and a couple of young gents, named forgotten, acted efficiently as runners Every one in the church, we believe received some token-even to the edito1 -some few much more than otherm The only objeetion that could he raise'. was that the great nunmber of presente distributed occupied such a length o. that time very many grew hungry, an< no doubt wished that fried chicken and biscuit were on the programme. Bui altogether it was a very pleasant affair a beautiful tree, indeed, and retlectei great credit on those who lent their ai< in an entertainment so full of pleasur to the children. The cold ride goini out the loss of dinner, the colder rid< bick was almost enough of trees fo one day, but still we ventured out a night for a short time to look at The beautiful Sunday School tr~e< planted in Luther Chapel, and had the pleasure of hearing some appropriat' singing by the Choir, and the happ3 remarks of the Rev. H. W. Kuas ti the children, in which he regretted, evel so much, not being able to give them rainbow as wesll as a tree. His explana t tion as to bow the rainbow was made f was plain and easily understood; but a never mind the rainbow, there was the t tree, apd a very nice looking one, too, and filled with elegant presents. Owing to the crowded state of the church, and the reasons before mentioned, we left early and before the gifts were awarded, fully satisfied that each would reach the one intended, and that we would not be missed from the small corner in the gallery where we could neither see nor be seen. The trees were a success, so far as we know. There were other trees in the country, but not having wings it was impossible for us to visit and re port on them all. Then we had the Carolina Native Minstrels at Temperance Hall. There was so much else on the carpet, how ever, that the Natives did not draw a house. There was a happy wedding in town on Christmas Eve, And an elegant supper Christmas night on College Hill, And, and, but we will not say any more, lest some folks think we indulged in Egg Nog, and have not yet got over the effects. Take the Christmas of 1874 altogeth er, w;ti, the exception that we lost our dinner on the very day of all days that people think they can least afford to do without that meal, we can honestly say it was a merry one, and one which will Jbe remembered long. ABOUT THE TOWN AND COUNTY. We regret having to say that the weather has changed-the beautiful days have vanished-and we are in mud. No doubt everybody here has realized the change-still it is onr duty as a journalist to mention it. The Carolina Native Minstrels did not draw worth a cent. The greatest change of modern times -the proprietorship of the Baltimore corner. Between the Cemetery and the steam mill there is a small bridge and a por tion of one plank is lacking. It bas been gone near about two months. Cannot some one in the neighborhood replace it. The County Commissioners will not object. L. R. Marshall very nearly starved last week, his run of customers was so great that for three days he had no chance to eat. We are glad to say he has had a few square meals since, and feels fresh for New Year's trade. Very little Egg Nog was drank this Christmas. This office reports not a drop. The individual who could not see it has recovered his vision. He was trou bled with 'red eye'-no egg in it. As we print but a half sheet and the printers want as much of the holiday as possible, the items of this column are few. commercial.
