Men who were supposed to be dead now wa.k the streets with faces beam ing% with s:niles. They are the rei nants of the ancient Denocracv. But in official circles the scene is different. Two years ago the President and his cabinet met at the White House to hear the election returns. This time the President said it would be time enough to hear the news through the news papers. No one sent him election returns, and to-day, as well as yester day, the Executive Mansion was de serted. Secretary Bristow called to transuct business, and the President, with a melancholy voice, said, "BE BIIEF ; I AM SICK. He does not hesitate to put the re sponsibility upon Congress, or rather upon tht- Republican iembers of both houses. It was enough that the coun try should suffer the privations and losses incident to the panic of 1873, without adding thireto the protracted uncertainty of useless debate on the currenr-y cquestion and the suspension of business consequent upon this Con gressional agitation. Oue thing, how ever, the President does not concede, and that is that the senseless agitation of TlE T11VRD TERM NONSENSE had anything to do with the result; nor does he think that Tuesday's vote is a repudiatiou of the Rlepublican party or Republican principles. It only ap pears to hini as the work of the panic. but he fails to say what extent the disti-ess was the re~sult of the legisla tion and administration of the Riepub liean party. In the midst of it, how ever, lie renews his determination to fill the important federal offices in the South with better men. and will, so far as it is in his power, see that no fur thier weakeaiug of the Republica strength shall be laid to his charge Ini his forthicomiing mnessage he will. in alludintt to) the condhitioni of affairs in the South, reconineiid that such mea:-ures be i:nmiediately passed as will enable the federal authorities to make the laws of the counitry re spected, though it is riot now clear what additional legisition is necessary. His course for the last ten or twelve years hcs been infamous as an actor in every peculation and fraud which have been brought to light. No greater cause can be fouud for rejoicing thau this just rebuke at the hands of a people who seeing the wrong have de teriined to put a stop to it. It is an unMistakeable protest; such characters are unfit for any position of either trust, power or honor. The meeting of the Ag-ricultural and Mechanical Association of South Caro lina, we notice by the Columbia pa. pcrs, has been only a tolerable sue Css, although the articles on ex hibition in the various departments were creditable and various, and more especially was there interest shown in stock of all descriptions. The whistle blows, the cars are off the writer within-for the great Fai which annually is held at the Capital < South Carolina. The Fair this year will compare wit any of its predecessors. Entering th lower story we saw many specimens < cotton bales, iammoth potatoes, pum kins and other products of the soi Specimens of mechanical talent wei also exhibited on this story. In ti upper portion of the building wei exhibited beautiful specimens of croci work, emblroidery and the fine arts.
