An attempt was also made to blow open the iron safe. On the same night, the crib used by Mr. J. N. Fowles. on Mrs. Whaley's lot, was entered and all the corn taken out. A negro with a smashed nose was seen on Tuesday morning, and the re port prevails that the wound was in flicted by a hammer in the hands of an other negro, into whose house the for mer had forcibly entered. TrE DIs'RI' CONFERENCE.-The Cokesbury Conference, embracing Al: beville, Newberry, Edgelield and a por tion of Laurens, convened according to appointment, in the Methodist Church of this town, at 9 o'clock Thursday morning, Rev. Henry 1. Mood, Pre siding Elder, in the chair. N.r. Thos. S. Moorman and Rev. Geo. F. Round, were elected Secretaries. The delega tion in attendance, both of ministers and laymen, though respectably large, was not as full as expected. Among the visiting brethren were the President of Columbia Female College, Dr. S. B. Jones, Prof. DuPree, of Wofford Col lege. Rev. Prof. S. Werber, of William ston Female College, Revs. W. D. Kirk land and J. Coke Smith. of Columbia, ev. J. M. Boyd, of Fairfield, and others. On the evening before, Wednesday. the old and familiar sound of the Meth odist Church bell was gladly heard af ter a silence of about two months, during which time the Church had been in the hands of the workmen engaged in re pairing it-and the summons called an unusually large congregation together to hear the opening sermon by the Rev. R. N. Wells, whichi was delivered with fervid eloquence, from the well chosen text-There is a sin unto death. The Presiding Elder made a happy selection in giving Mr. Wells the initiatory. Contrary to the custom heretofore of devoting the larger part of the time to business, it was determined to occupy the principal portion of this Conference in religious exercises, consequently each morning had its sermon as well as night, and the spare hors of morning and afternoon were employed in the discussion of interesting religious sub jects-such as prayer, public and pri vate. infant baptism, temperance, edu ation, ind kindred subjects. We think the change on the old routine a happy one, in that the meetings were made more profitable and instructive to the body, and decidedly more interesting to the audience which, after the flrst*morn ing's session, was large and attentive. In fact we. have never seen a greater interest mnanifeste4 generally by the people of our town la a religious Con. ference before, and the influence exert ed we trust has been largely for good. noon and night, brought its crowds of deeply interested people, and we feel confident that the delegates in attend ance will long remember the District Conference of 1874, and will take home with them the highest opinions of a community so generally appreciative and attentive. The meeting was one of great interest, and we deeply regret not being able in the crowded state of or columns to give a full and extended report of its deliberations, and of the eloquent discourses preached during its sessions. As to the latter we must be content in saying that the sermon on Thursday morning was delivered by the Rev. Sam'l Werber, that at night Rev. W. D. Kirkland: Friday morn ? the Rev. J. Coke Smith, night Rev. erber; Saturday morning, Rev. J. E oyd, and night Rev. W. T. Capers, D. and seldom has it been permitted a co nity to listen to anything equal in p' eloquence and religious fer vor, to t they heard on those occa sions.\ The p9 -me of exercises on the Sabbath *e e as follows: Methodit hurch-Love Feast at 9 o'clock, a. tn. Wilson, a niece of Major L. J. Jones, is one of which she may well be proud. Among those who stood highest in their classes, and who were commended for special excellence, we are gratified to say was this young lady. There were three in her chss who received the high ldistine tinction, and of that number Miss Wil son was the second. ABOUT THE TowN AND COUNTY. The weather is pleasant. No lack of rain as Net. Crops are still blooming. Miss Babe MeKellar will accept thanks for her flattering invitation to attend a pie-niv on the occasion of her birth-day last Friday. It was impossi ble to get there. We are pleased to learn that she had a nice time-her of fering was highly appreciated. There will be a pie-nic in the Beth Eden neighborhood next Saturday. The people in that section know how to fix thinces up. The pie-nic and Tax-payers meeting at Jalapa on Saturday last was a griand success. The Methodist Camp Meeting at Wicker's Camp Ground, commences on Thursday next. There will be quite a number of tenters. It is suggested that the officers exercise some stringent rules for the prevention of bad behav ior on the part of certain youth. Mr. Cash's new store is rising rapid ly under the skillful direction of con tractor Prince, and Uncle Julius' foun dations are following suit. If a man's nose looks scarlet red does it follow that he drinks hard. Fruits are plentiful and cheap enough. Watermelons we regret to say are too thick in rind. Its a fraud. The Coun ty Commissioners will please appoint a committee to sample watermelons. Something should be done to protect the people, Farmers have no right to raise this delicious fruit with such thick rinds. Corn stealers have commenced ope rations already. We hear of several depredations made on the fields of our farmers. Steel traps and buck shot may prevent its spread. ,Give according to your means, is sel. dom carried out; the majority of men give according to their meanness. A sensible man says you can't eat enough in a week to last you a year, and you can't advertise on that plan either. Several chickens were incautiously and unadlvisedly killed on Tuesday last, in the expectatien that a numbev of delegates to the Methodist Conference wouldl arrive on that day. They did not come and the chickens were wasted. Pity. It was only the difference .of a day, however, as the poultry have had no ca~nse to complain since that time. The stock has decreased alarmingly. As an evidegee of the value of adver tising we give in proof that on the 8th inst., we advised the people in the coun try to bring in chickens and whatever else tney nau zor saw, amEI a o me ing was on hand. On the 10th, two th~rds of the farming population were in town with the wholesome products of the faim. Since then the other third has been in, snd now the entire num er are making another trip. Wp nev er saw the like. Advertising is the back bone of everything that is good. On the strength of our invitation our supply of beef has also been largely in creased, and Newberry for a tune is happy. If you have anything for sale, .good people, or desire to buy any particular thing. put an advertisement in the County paper. Mr. W. S. Birge, one of Newberry's best meat suppliers, will please accept our thanks for a very acceptable offer ing on Saturday last. "He who steals my purse steals trash. but he who filches from me my good name," &c., applies to the effort made in denying the HERALD the merit of causing a change for the better in our market supplies. The elephant is in a state of suspend ed animation, and some even say that he is dead. If he is really defunct we shall write his obituary soon. Negt Monday will be Sale-day, and we will be delighted to make the ac quaintance of every man who is not a subscriber to the HERALD. Now is a good time to bring in that promised wvood. An A merican humorist tell us that it would have been money in his pocketifhe had been born without a stomach, and then proceeds to figure up th'e cost of a chronic dyspepsia, to which he is a martyr, and which he says it is impossible to cure. On this point, "Josh Billings," (for he is the martyr referred to) is mistaken. Unless his stomach differs from all other dyspeptic stomachs, Hostetter's Bit ters .will cure him in less than three months. This it would be safe to guarantee under any penalty. There are a few, a very few, actual pecifis for disease in existence, and Hostet ter's Stomach Bitters may be set down as one of them. In cases of indigestion it never fails. Persons who had suffered for many years al most every conceivable species of torture from this agonizing complaint, have been perma nently curedl with the Bitters iu six weeks . undreds of such instances are on record,au thenticated by the testimony of prominent men in every wvalk of life, eminent physiciaus among the number. But this celebrated veg etable preparation is something more than a stomachic and tonic. It is also an alterative f wonderful virtue. In liver complaint its effects is as direct and immediate as that of calomel or blre pill, and far more salutary; and in all diseased conditions of the bowels, notably in cases of constipation, its regulatin~ nrnrisngi h ihs ere srie Newberry Buiness Diret+ry.
