'made through the cohmnms of the HER AI., that a public meeting be held to. take the beef question into considera tion, it is gratifying to state, was taken hold of with a vim by certain pronlinent hungry men, and through their agency a large and enthusiastic meeting was held on Wednesday last. It was or ganized by calling Col. Firstent to the chair. and the appointment of Capt. Bijsket as Secretary. ..The Colonel af ter thanking his fellow-citizens for their appreciation in. calling. himi to such a high position, .explainid the oject of the meeting-and feelingly portrayed the straits to which the people arc re 1duced, and the probable results which will follow if the trouble be not stopped. He said he loves goodl beef and plenty of it, and was willing to pay a good price, and much more of pertinence to the subject. Remarks were made by several other individuals, who looked as if they had been in the dry pork business since saiusage time. and a letter was read by Mrs. Makeshift, who said that she was from one of the first families, and had been - redt!ced in circumstances and force,d to make a precarious living by koeging boarders. Things went well with hen- until beef ceased f6 be a regu lar commodity in market, and since that time she has nearly lost her wits as well as her boarders, and instead of feeling like an honorable representative of a first family, she feels as if she were in deed a member of one of the last. She implored that some action be taken, The reading of the above letter made a visible imiression on the audience, and it could be seen that THE '.ITD had conme; any longer forbearance would cease to be a virtue.
