We copy the following item, which hmas been for a long time going the runds of the agricultoral press, show ing how little scientific attention has been ordinarily bestowed upon the subject of poultry keeping: 'It has been ascertained that the ovarium of a fowl is composed of 600 ovules. or eggs; therefore a hen, during the whole of her-life, cannot possibly lay more than 600 eggs, which in the natural course, are distributed over nine vears, in the follfwing propor tion First year after birth.......... 10 to 20 Second * do. .........100 to 120 Third do. .........120 to 135 Fourth do. .........100 to 115 Fifth do. .......60 to S0 Sixth do. ......... 50 to 60 Seventh do. ......... 35 to 40 Eighth do. ......... 15 to 20 Ninth do. ......... 1 to 10 It follows that it would not be prof itable to keep hens after their fourth year, as their produce will not pay for th2ir keeping, except when they are of a valuable and scarce breed." To begin with, we may doubt the possibility of making ai accurate count of the nu:ber of ovisaCs, in the ovaries, or affirming that no new ones make their appearance out of minute germs or cells in the course of the life of the hen. In the next place, such a limitation must have reference to the actual con stitution of the fowl, and this, either in its wild or tame condition. If to the former, the nutuber of ovisacs, even if definitely ascertained, can have no connection whatever with the real habit of the hen, since she lays in a wild state, only as many as she can cover; if to the tame fowl,it is strange to find so definite a rule laid down for an auimal that is, in the highest de ,nee, of an artificial character, and whose n)ature is, in so manny points, constantly being remae.-Thie Poul try Wjorld. GOOD POINTS IN A COW. 1. Youth. A cow is in her prime at from four to six years, and the best paying time to buy is just after the birth of her second .or third calf. 2. Prcominee and fullness of milk veins, and velvety softness of skin. The milk veins run downi on either side of the ainial toward the udder, and arc easily perceptible to the eye, or can be readily found by pressure of the hand, if the animal is not over fat. Docility and q1uietness of disposi tion. These are indicated by large, mild and clear eyes, and an air of co)a tentmenat generally. A cowV that is quiet and contented feeds at case, chews her cud with entire satisfacetiona, and will secrete and yield more milk thtan any restless and turbulent animal, hav ing simailar milking characteristics in other respects. CrT THIs Oct.-A tea made of peach leaves is a sure cure of kidteey diffieulty. A plaster made of fresh slack lime and fresh tar is a sure cure for a cancer, which, with all its roots, will conme out. A tea made of chesnut l,-aves, dIrank in the place of water. will cure the most obstinate case of drvpsy, in a few days. A tea made of rit,e or dried wvhortleberries, and drank in the place of water is a sure and speedy cure for scrofulous difficulties, however bad.-31emphis Register. RED PEPPER FOR INSECTS -Those who have tried it say thaat cayenne y p.per will destroy cabbage liee. the cabbtage worm and all insects that prey upon the leaf of eit her the cabbage or turnip. Scatter over the leaves while wet with dew in the morning - mall quantity will suffice. KEEPING HENS.-In general a singing hen is a laying hen; certainly a happy hen will carry out the adage just as a comfortable contented cow is a good milker. And this is the secret of both cow and hen. Feed well, treat well, and you make happy and content ed. A company of hens, therefore, mu.t not be crowded; must not be cold, iust not suffer from bad or in sufficient food. A hen must not be disturbed or annoyed in any way. It :u.t not SuITer fro.u foul watur, but -iust have clean wat.-r at all times. It must have a dust spot to wallow in ; a quiet retreat to lay its eggs, and an easy, plesant place to roost. It must have plenty of light. All this makes Saninier for the hen, Summer in Win ter. And what will prevent it form laying, singing and laying? Any breed will do well, some better than others. Never keep a lieu till it is old, either for its flesh or its eggs. Hens thus treated will never fail to do well, especially the best breeds. It is a safe investment. And these investments in small colonies may be multiplied at will, each independent. of the other, although adjoining. It will be seen here, as in other things, that the principles must be aimed at. Tnese may be carried out in various ways. Each one is to do this himself. If not capable, he is not likely to be successful with hens. ONE GOOD FROM THE FARMERS' MOVEMENT.-Tnis "farmers' move iment" is going to be of great bene fit to farmers in a directi-n they least expect, in my judgment. Some of the Granges are organized to enable farmers to steer clear of middle men. To do this they have to get at facts and figures in relation to the handling and the sale of their produce. and in relation to the cost and value of what they buy for their own use and confort, of which they have been almost totally ignorant hitherto. They are going to discover how com plex are their relations to other class es, and how their business relations to each other way be affected by a small differenee in the cost of farm man agenient. It is going to develop busi ness habits where they have not exist ed before with any considerable degree of thoroughness. If they don't get wedded to this fool. ish idea that they can override other classes with impunity by getting con trol of State legislatures, courts, &c., and loose sight of the fact that they have only equal rights with other class es, this stirring up, this meeting to gether, this hunting for facts, this dis eussion of ways and means, this social friction, will do more to lift the farm ers of the country into true business relations with others, than all the preaching on the subject that has been doae by the agricultural press the past twenty-five years. or than it can do for a quarter of a century to come.-Rural New Yorker. PLAN'TING OLD GR.UPE VINEs. The labor and time spent in transplant ing old grape vines will, in nine cases out of tea, be thrown away. A bear ing viue, more than four years old, seldom, if ever, does well, no matter how much care there is taken digging up and~ replacing this class of~ vines. A~ strong" one year old vine of the same variety, set out at the sa:nc time, will in four years be stronger, covering more surfacee and decidedly more pro dictive than the old vine, while the, cost of the old vine and the labor of plantingr will at least be four times as much. Those who have had experi enee in grape growing will not make the mistake, but farmers and country gentlemiein who want to have fruit in a short time take it for granted that a izare old vine is better than a small o: e for th:eir purpose. It mzen tins a case where a piece of the stom. ach of a dead horse, which was cover ed with bot-worms was spread ou a board and spirits of turpentine was poured on the worms ; yet after an: hour iiot one was detached from the fesh. Then whale oil was poured on them, when they all let go their hold,~ and died almnost immediately. Hence the inference that whale oil should be ued to detach the worans from the living horse, when attacked by bots. ([Prairie Farmer. To keep up the fertility of our pas-. tures, it is evident that we must do. our best to cheek the growth of such a vegetation as is rejected by stock. Bu kt snot enough to destroy the ueesadinjurious plaints, we must e1c~urage the growth of the vegetable ones. How shall these objects be completed ? Draining causes the rain to sink through considerable thickness of soil before it runs off, and hence it causes less loss of nutritive matter than is ocea sioned by rain washing soil, as it does in undrained lands, carrying off to the streams and rivers much of the valua ble nutritive matter that abounds on the surfLce.
