SEED CON One grea't evil in seeding time is that, when all is ready for planting and the farmer goes to his crib to pick out his seed, he suddenly becomes suspicious that it will not grow. Nev ertheless, the field cannot wait ; -the 1>e*st is selected and planted, and he trusts to luck. Whncorn ripens upon the stalk perfectly, before the advent of frosty nights, and thereafter placed in nar r:.w cribs secure from wet, it will e artainly grow, if properly planted in the proper season ; but this perfect ni pening does not unusually occur. T1he seasons of 1871 and 1872 have been remarkable for the perfect ripen ing of corn throughout the West. Consequently there have been ud complaints about corn rottening in the .gramnd when properly planted. The piresnt sevson, a vast amount of the corn raised in the West is imperfectly rip)ened. That is, there is more or less so,ft andl shriveled corn iu the field.. We may expect complaints, next ses~ son, if seed bie taken for planting fromn suchm cribs promiscuously. It would be far better that two-year-old seed were planzted next year. rather than trust to such seed. Indeed we know many good farmers who kept one-year old seed always on hand for just such emergencies. it is perfectly safe te plant it three years old, if properly saved, but it does not germinate as re-ulily as nevw seed. It is better. nowever, that seed be saved every year. A good time to do. this is while husking. Whenever youl come across an exceptionally good ear, instead of husking, break it. wiA I the husk remIaining. In unloading ,these unshucked ears may be thrown aside, and at any convenient time, tied together and hung across poles in some dry, airy situation :or. better, braid themi into strings and hang them in the smokehouse and dry them over a moderate smoke. Served in this way they not only germinate surely bpt quickly, and thereby much vesation is saved. Flint, or, as it is called, YankeeI corn. gins to dry first in the grain. With our Western dent~varieties, the reverse is the case. These commencee drving at the cob- heuce the <i 1 of the first is plump and round, and that of the latter is long and indented. Hence, also, fiint corn may be cut and shocked much greener, comparatively, than the Western varieties. For this reason, the seed of the flint varieties is surer to grow when husked from the shock than the dent varieties, for the reason that, the husk being thin ncr and the grain more shallow, it is not so easily injured in the grain as the dent. In saving seed-corn, select the upper ear if there be two good ones on the stalk. If both be not good reject them. One large ear is better than two small ones : at all events save only fromn stalks having the most perfect ears. A field of corn planted three feet eightt inches each way, three stalks to the hi!!, each bearing one large ear, would produce a crop that would even sup. prise some of our premium corn grow ers. it is true that it costs time and labor to carefully select and save seed cora ; but if saved in a conscientious manner. and you have a surplus, yon iieed have no scruples in asking yodr more indolent neighbor a dollar and,a hlf a bushel for the seed. It may v~ cost you one dollar a bushel to save it properly : and, if no one choose to buy it, your seed will be all right another year~. C One more thing worthy of mention in relation to seedcornm. Next to ventilation, light is essential to the health of horses.
