TIE 1IPROVING AGRICUL TURE OF THE SOUTH. The Texas Farmer says: Agriculture is making such rapid ad vances in this State, that two years ago there was scarcely an agricultural soci ety in the -State. Now, th.re are some forty organized, and others in progress of formation. In Georgia, the empire State of the South, there are more farmers who have studied theh.emistry of manures, and who understand the economical application of it to the soil. than there is iv any one of the old free States at this time. The great revolution from slave to free labor, so far from discouraging the Southern farmer, has only shaken him up from his lethargy, and compelled him to be energetic, self-reliant, and wilhng to learn everything that can aid his farming under the new re gime. I have just received a pamphet con taining the premium list of the fair of the Georgia Agricultural Soci.-ty, to be held at Macon on the 16th. 17th, and-18th of November next, it also 'oitains tle proceedings of the con vention at Atlanta -in February last. Instead of selecting a president from .among the titled "sidewalk farmers," - they nominate for that office the 'man who had bought the most conmercial niiiure, and who had raisee more cotton and corn than any other man in Georgia-David Dixon, of Jancock 'County. The premium list i: suigen eris, embracing more items of both the work-shop and the f5rn than any oth er I have ever yet seen. Among the more significant premiums are us fol lows: A $25 patent lever w-.tch for the largest quantity of Indin corn grown by any white boy under 16 years of age on an acre of land. The same for the largest crop of cotton grown by a white boy of like uge on an aerd of land. These are probably 'the first premiums ever offeied at the tbuthat went to acknewledge the dign4i of white mantiial labor, and to encourage.habits of industry i: the youRgrand rising generation. - erily, the world moves.-America . Agri -cultur'st. -CoMPoSITION OF SoILs.-.A soils 4r are chiefly composed of three su.stan ees, viz., Lime, alumina and sili;,. Lime is met within several forn.3 in all countries, such as chalk, sl/l and stone; silicia in the form of - daiis sand, silicious gravel, and amo-g ;lay as fine sand; alumina usually in the form of elay; and these are supposed to be formed by'detritions-worn from rocks and* incorporated with _organie matter known as sandy, gravelly and clayey, the last forming, when unenrichi ed, the most unprofitable soil to tliefr mer, yielding inconsidletable er-p fider difficult tillage, and that of a valueless quality. The sandy soils- differ from the clay, inasmuch as there is but lit. tl.e tenacity in:them, anid they require manures and other addition to consol .idate.tliem, thus preventing exessive ev-aporation of all their moistare. 'With the proper means for impro)ving a sandy soid, T mitieh prefer it to clay, as it is warmer and brings crope t.o * maturity rapidly. Gravelly soiL .rc apt to be mgore barren than. either e:ay or. sand, on account of the large atou f undecomposed rock -ab sincesueontained in -them. T~hey are naturally barren because of lieir silicious.character, and are come:.enly known as hungry soils. Muck oi pecat, when properly prepared, is one of the best additions that can possibly be used - foball these soils, as it contain:; an abundan supply of decayed veget4 table inatta r. which, when judiciously applied, must produce excellent r.'sults in -developing the productiveness 'of poor land,-N. Y. .ler ald. ' DIOrsY-XrzTa F'ARC.-It is if ten the eatse that horses; either young - 'or old coustitutionalIj or othierw.se d&ficient in st'azina and healthful .vigtor show. it by swellings of the- legs or belly, or various other parts of the body, caused by accumiulations of se rumn or watery fluid either in thc cellu lar tissu.c.oif the muscles or in the cavi ties of the body. This conidition is knwna dropsy or water fairdy. The treatment needed in such cases is to re store the condition of the animial by improWving the digestion, by nutritious food, and by tonics. .Iu this case we won.Id sureest that the best and the seamlesimyV.' with lbran, oats. and liniseed meal be given, the hay to be cut, mnoistened,. anid mixed [with the - other feed. Journal writes;: "About twenty years ago I applied a bit of comnpress ed sponge to afford temporary relief, and was delighted to find that it effect ed a radical cure. I make the sponge as solid as leather, by wetting and then win ding then string very tightly round it and then drying it thoroughly. We do not vouch for the truth of i he following story, which is told by the Athens Georgian: "Tiere is a report prevalent on our streets that a inan living near Scull's Shoals, about twenty wiles be low this city, told his wife'last Satur day night to awake him up before 1 Cold God almighty woke ou Sunday, as he wanted to cateh a mess of ish for breakfast. His wife, in accord ance with his instructious, called him before day Sunday morning, and ie, taking his fishing tackle, went to the stream, and, finding a tempting hole, took his seat upon a rock. Ifis wife waited anxiously for his arrivi but he not. appearing. toward nigit she sumnioned some neighburs and going to the stremn, she found the missing man seated upon a ruck, and, upon the party requesting hin to get up and accompany the n home, he told them that the Almighty had sent a judgment upon hiI and he had be come part of the rock and could not move. His friends thinking that he was jesting. took hoid of him and at tempted to move him, when he coi menced screaming at the top of his voice and asked them for God's sake not to attempt to lift- hiu up, as it would murder him. IIe further in formed them that he had been infori ed by an unseen presence that, as a judgement for his profanity and Sab bath-breaking, he would never be sev ered from his present seat, but would remain fastened to it all his days and that he would be made to preach his own funeral. They say he talks quite freely, and is visited by iminense 6rowds from this and adjoining coun ties. Several parties, we learn, from this place and Winterville went to see him Wednesday., but have not yet re turned." Miscellaneous. PHOTOGRIPH GILLERY, COLUMBIA, S. C. IC d c (Graduates of the Pennsylvania College of Dental Surgery.) Mar. 19, '73-11-:f. To Women, Both Married and ress, Single. tn - Apply for relief before you become a con firmed invalid. -- I have been for years past attending stict ly to the treatment of diseases of women, a both married and single, and as the number ,of cases co)ntinue.s to increase al:nost daily I will pay special attention to those who may apply to mec for help, and may, if I should get a suflicient number of cases, make it a specialty. There are many women who are taking medlicines reconm mended for such disenses, which are worse thman usele.4, they palliate and sometimes sceem to give relief, but in fact they postpone the evil until the d1isease assumes the chronic form, and thenm they ap ply'to the Physvician for relief, which can be given, but not so roon as when taken in the frst or early s:'ge. I use no quack medicines, I treat- discases on ta:ional. and scientific principles. E A P. B3.RUFF. N. B. I practice for cash only and prompt i payments. Mar. 12, 10-tf.
