She 1c had been for some length of time afflicted w::h dropsy, but up to a fe w hours of her death showed no unusual pain or approach of dissolution. Her age was 73. "' -EEIL RINtGEs.-The Be-r5er family gave two of their chaste an:1 h ighly interest ing entertainsaents in this town last wee'-, and as a proof of appreciation large and en thtusiastic audiences greeted them. They are capital, and wvill always receive a warm wel come in Newberry. FouND DEAD.-Mr. Abraham Wicker, an old citizen of this County, living about four mi:es from town, was found dead with his head near the fire, on Monday morning last. NOT So.-The Lauren, viile Herald says: *-The Newberry Herald has thotughts of' boxing up its "tread,ng room"nd forwairding it to the Vienna exposition." Where friend Thomas got thuis idea from we can't tell, no doubt though in one of his cRUISES in search of items. We certainly shall not box it np, and if we send it an where, Barnum t.h:di have the refusal, as he is one of t.he most progressive metn of the day. tlMoRE WEATHER.On Saturday morning wi last, the weather turned miserably co:d, while Th the heaver,s above threatened a fall of somne thin~. The suspense was not lung, for soon fros a 'harp. brisk, driving snow began to fall, at or first in small flakes, then large. A FATAL ApFAIR.-John Netil, quite a 'youth, was fatally stabbed in the cheek and throat on Tuesday last. in the road near Seun's mill, while ou'his way to town. After he was cu; he rode as far as Helena, when falling, he was taken into the house of Squire E. P. Lake, and there died on Satur day moruiv,. It is said he was in company with a young man named Boozer, and that the dreadful act was committed by him, and that it was the result of an old qaarrel. Both were in liquor. Chiriski's powers of veu triloquism are of superior order, his mimicry splendid, his feats on the slack wire such as are not often seen, and in keeping with t;,e above are all of L pleasing performances. There will be another en tertainment to-night,.(fuesdty), and every one who can raise the amount necessary to buy a ticket will assuredly be there, and some will secure prizes. in silver, gold, green- e backs or may be tin, who knows. h b SA.LE-DAY.-CotrarY to e';peCtation-the t roads being so be.d-a large number were in n town on Monday from the country. Nothing q of unusual interest occurred-unless we men ton the melancholy fact that the consump- t< tion ot whisljey was distressingiy ahead of tl former occasions. And it mily have been tl owing to the great strength of the liquor, or the very bitter cold, that there were more 0 limber legged men on the street tlan have t< been seen in many a day. No one hurt though so far as known. S The siles of land were as follows: 47 3-5 0 acres at SSOO; 56 at $550; 73' at S575, and n 105 at S1,455. 0 ti BE&TTE LATE THAN NEVER.-Aboat o twenty-three years ago, the "local" went for a b dear friend in a practical joke. For months b that friend gave us no more of his kindly p smiles or speech. Time the great softener fli opened his mou:h, he spake, bat cold!y. For c: months'mo-e he iooked crost-eyed. The joke d was repented, forgiveness asked and rightly, ii the offence was heinous. For t wenty-three 114 years forgiveness bad. been withheld, till Ilast Saturday the welcome words came through s by mail "I freely forgive you, Tom." It was a long time coming, but we doubt ifit is not more welcome now than it wo.:ld have been in years go ne by. Well done frietid of our youth. iteader, if you have aught against U thy brother, do likewise. - h CoL. J. P. THoxAs.-We wero gratified 0 with a visit from this gentleman on Monday ~ last, iIe designs visiting the principal towns P in the up-country for the purpose of address- I ing the people on the general topics and issues of the day, and we are pleased to say that no a one is better qualified for such an important j service. Ne wherry has thus bc-en honored ~ with the firs' visit. We regret very much ~ :hat we knew not of his comng, or of the ~ stirring address which he made in the tI Town Hall, till after it was over. At the con- n clusion of his remarks, the claims of the S Carolinian, (the Interests of which sterling ti paper he is now representing,) were brought ~ to the attention of his audience, and it is a pleasure to say that a large number of sub- a scribers were obtained by him.s DxD HE~ MEAN T 7-A six footed, slender p: specimen of humanity stepped into Marshall's ei on Saturday afternoon, and in a voice as pl weak as iboarding house soup, inquired if M. re would like to have a load of wood on Mon- te day ? 'Depends on-circumstances," said M., iti ''if it is to be a present, yes, if not I dont Iof need it." This local thought he would gene -f rously offer to take a load off the young oi man's hands also, if it would contribute to la his happiness, but before the ofe'- could be a1 made, the young man replied to M. "Well, w i don't know a man I would sooner give a tl: load to, and if one has to be given away you n shall have it, if for no other reason than that u y ou have but one arm." It looked like chaw- p ing; we thought so, and felt glad that our ai offer had not been made, otherwise the inno- c, cent looking youth with the weak voice might have chawed us. He did not crack a S smile, and whether he intended to chaw our friend or not is hard to say. He did not look ti like it certainly, but the subtle influence cf a sarcasm was felt. We advise M. to let soft .cl looking youths alone hereafter. We shall. -. b Thu PLAcE.-One of the handsomest tl stocks of crockery, glasswsare and house furnishing goods in the State is to be found c in Columbia. The thrifty and neat housew ife tl would be charmed to see the great var-iety of ornamental as well as useful articles kept on hand by those polite and attentive dhealers, Messrs. Kingslaud & Heath. Our best advice is to pay them a visit, and if that is not con venient just now send an order. Their prices b are certainly very nioderate. a ANOTHER PLAcE--and by no means the a icast of places, nor the last of places, but an important place, and a very pleasant place, S and thue place we might say-with the least E possible stretch-of all places, is the store of ca Dr. E. E. Jackson in the city of Columbia. c; A visit to the city would be only half complete if that were not inicluded. Do oblige us by rc looking at his card in another column-,a AND STItL ANOTHEn,-and not a whit b behind either. For,while in the first you can P be supp)lied with every vessel and appliance b w bich ingenuity has invented to put things in or to hold them, and in the second, the physi- y cal man can be built up, renovated, soaped, I pec famend and made to rejoice and desire the b articles alluded to firs'.ly-for without health r man wants but little-yet in this third, stud for f the present, last place, can be found some thing to fill up the dishes and vessels-and to TI make the stromach strong. At Davies & C. the,-aext door to Jacksons-is the "useful d store" so called, where all the choice pro- - ducts of land and sea, such as fish, fowl and game. besides birds which fly in the air, and oysters which cling to rocky beds in b>rine, g anud iny other things beside, can be found, ' at the most convenient and opportune times. , We affirm that Davies & Co's store is a good place to go to or to send to, and if any one I dnbsjuint let him Qr har tr it 6ee hinennL. n Soss or T.-We notice that the ladies of { C,>lutnbia, belonging to and interested in the . welfare of the Division in that city propose a temperance bazaar, and the time is fixed for the first week in April. It is promised that the affair w ill not only be pleasant bu: profitable. Anything contribted by the ladies of Newberry to aid their temperateaud rair sisters will be highly appreciated, and any information as to how and when to send will be given by applying at this office. Edward Carswell, the great temperance ecturer from Canada, is now iu the State and will lecture in the above city on the 12th inst. A visit from this distinguibhed and elcquent ;ent!eman will be made to this town shortly, tnd a treat may be expected. May it not be well before concluding this .otice to ask the fair ones of Newberry if a C )azaar or fair cannot be gotten up here also? E We are confident that there is beauty, wit and L rim enough in our ladies to get up some- F hing good. Let some one speak out on this ubject. cl ArrENVTIox boys-for its kite time. As far >ack as memory runneth, the boys have de- J roted all their spare time-and much which >wght not to have been spared-to the manu Acture and flying of kites during the breezy nonth of March. Weused tobe famous at it nd from the little common 'cut out' with hinuest stick or straw run through the mid lie and across, to the magnificent and grace ul "bender," as high as a man with glass yes and such a tail, ghewilikins, :he kite, tot the man, reader, and through all the Inter aediite styles of 'house kite,' 'star,' bird,' te. What a time there used to be. Han reds of kites in the air, and some pulling so ard as almost to lift a wee shaver off the round. But kites are not so large now, nor o they fly as high as iu those good old boy tood days, more's the pity. The cord now is ot so strong either, for much of It is made of aper, and would not carry a 'cut out' half way ut of sight, much less farther. Oh dear! nt, never mind, we don't make 'benders' ow nor go on them either, and we can only dvise the boys to go to work and make some nd raise them to the skies, foritselegant fan; oing to school can't compare with kite ying. Wno BURNT Co.UMBIA?-Messrs. Walk r, Evans & Cogswell, Publishers, Charleston, ave kindly sent us a copy of a pamphlet, earing the above title. It is a highly in-U tresting document, and the readercan obtain inch information from it in answer to the aery as to who burnt Columbia? "The principle object of the publication is > dissemiitate widely throughout the South ic statements of these Federal officers, that :e facts may be drawn out and testimonv und to completely rebut the statemen:s put C ut by the United States Attorneys, and thus > vindicate the Southern people. "Many of the witnesses of this tragedy are :attered over the South, and it is the desire the attorneys eugaged in the case to attract otice to the pamphlet, drawing the attention r these witnesses, and induce them to con -ibute their tes:imony to the vindication of ar Southern charge, that the Federal army urnt Columbia. Since the statements have th en made which are embodied in this tii amphlet, the cause has passed beyond the rirs of a mere case for certain English IS ainmants, and assamed the broad basis of efend ing Carolinians and Soutbrons from theI asc assertion that they, either through care sness or design burnt Columbia." Price 50 ets. per copy, and sold by book llers and deaiers generally. - - at INTERESTLNG IIETING.-The regular leting of the Sons of Temperance, Newber SDivision, on Tuesday night last, was of un sal interest, in that several of the fair dies of our town were initiated into the of igh and responsible privileges of that noble rder, besides a goodly number of the young I en of the community. The ladies were hap ly turoduced first to be made acquainted ith the beautiful workings of the order, and1 rn the reason that they might take part in ad njoy the impressive initiation of their I rothers, and thus also lend the incentive and Ic ell dor.e of their presence to a step wh ich, so large a degree, must contribute to the m el-being and happiness of the initiates and te good of society. Although the ceremo le were unavoidably long, yet we are I itisfied that they were so interesting that e time occupied did not produce weariness. re are pieased to say tha t there were about Ai renty ladies present, and all of the fairest sig id brightest and best, and that they a' rallowed the iron clad pledge like men,. ad judging from the serious and earnest ex ression of each charming countenance, we cl i safely Touch that there will be no broken edges to be reported of this bright bevy of cruits; and with such an example and coun uance how much of hope may be indulged a by the friends of Newberry Division, and i the order generally. Nine young men c ere introduced and passed through the arn deal of the initiatory ceremony after the dies were properly instructed and bestowed, 2d on no previous occasion has there been I itnesed such an initiation as was then gone rough with. Bat we must not occupy too uch space. Suffice it, Tuesday night's eating was a distinguished era in the pros ets of No. 8, a green oasis in its career, id we may well look forward to the bright t anticipations for the future. DAPS-ALL Fo2 THE LADIES. Fipins says that there are three sexes te male sex, the female sex, and the insects. Why is the letter C like the love of mis-1 ief?-Because it makes harm charm. An old bachelor compares life to a shirt utton, because it so often hangs by a tread. A man who takes to drink because lhe is rossed in love, always has the sympathy of ie women. It is now claimed that the architect of thes reat "Chinese wall" was a woman; but a, -oman wouldn't do anything to keep men at in that way.
