Telling a falsehood is contemp tible. Ignorance is disgraceful, and laziness is shameful. Avoid all the above vices and aim at usefulness." Aa agricultural paper says strawberry beds maybe protected from birds, by running a wire along the walk to which a cat is chained. CoNsoL.Darro.-The assessmen~tt divi sions, comprising the Third Internal Revenue District-ifteen Counties-have been, as we learn, re-arranged, whereby only three assis t tant assessors are now employed, each hav ing five Counties, instead of five each, with three Counties in their divisions. The counties of Spartanburg, Newberry, Lanrens, York, and Union, comprise the Second division, Mr. J. HI. Dennis, collector, with his offce at Newberry. CL.osE Ur.-The year has closed, that is 187-2, and following so illustrious and time honored an example,every man should close Aup his accounts, otherwise some unfortu nates may perchance have to close up in an other fashion. Printers are ever crying out close up, and with reason, for they have to do with very many close fellows, in the back part of whose heads the thought of closing - up never eaters. We are no exception, and we cry out stentoriously as it were, close up, front, steady, double quick, march np to the Captain's offce and close up, then rest. LADIES TIEs.-The new holiday ties are made of velvet, either black, green, blue or -plum color, and lined with bright or pale tinted silks. These are very elegant. Bows made to match the tie are worn also in the hair. Cravats of light colored crapes are lined with satin of a contrasting color as maize cernpe lined with blue, green with flesh color and so on. Wide black velvet ribbons attached to a medallion are worn around the throat. These ribbons are sometimes embroidered with email devices in gilt or silver, and sometimes threaded with pearls. If "it is asure sign of an early spring to see a cat intently watching a small hole in the wall," it may not be amiss to give a hint or t wo-even if borrowed-In view of its ap pr-oach, and first: Caster-oil beans succeed best in the bowels *of the earth. They will soon work their way out. In reaping wheat never take it by .the beard. It goes against the grain. The usual time to put in rye is early in the morning. Some husbandmcn, especially those of the town, continue to run it in at in tervals of half an hour ntil bed-time. The practice is only allowable In case of a dry season. A HINT TO ADTER'TIsERS.-To write a taking and appropriate advertisemeat is nor so eag a matter as it would appear to be at first sight. A retail dry-goods merchant will of ten write an advertisement, intended to b. read by women and young girls, and make it readas pompously as though he were a lra great jobber, selling to the trade, or as sol or' emuly as an old bachelor makes his dirsi dece proposition of i.arriage. He is serious and - stiff, where he should be agreeable and at tractive, and uses technical terms where the lightest, simplest, plainest idiom would be 4much more suitable. Most advertisementi are too hard and formal, and two unnatural, nd this is one reason why reading notices are so much sought after. Pifer, the accomplishepritcipal of this Seminary, commenced his Spring Session on Tuesday, with a promising array of young lady pupils, notwithstanding the wretched weather' lately experienced. Long may he contai hi snccessfal sessioas, and open and close as pleasantly and profitably as in the past. The advantages offered by a course of instrmctiou under Prof. P., and his able assisfMats, are very many, and parents are invited to consider them. We are pleased to note that the amiable and intelligent instrue- a tress in the primaiy department, Miss'Fannie C Leavell, and Prof. Werber, in the musical department, are with Prof. Pifer in his excel lent school. TaE METHODIST congregation of this sec tion, as also a portion of the circuit, were preached to on several occasions during the past week,and onthe Sabbaih, by the Rev. A. r. Chriitzber. of 1barlington Station, and with much profit. Mr. Chritzberg is f one of the most eloquent, impressive and. feeling preachers in the Conference, and the L congregation and those of the community who were privileged .to listen to him on _ those occasions, will hold as up in the ex pression of the high esteem in which we re gard him. His discourse on Sabbath nighti was on the sinful prayer of the Psalmist, "Oh, that I had the wings of a dove, that I might flee away and De at rest," and forcibly were all the points of that beautiful and s practical subject elucidated. L On Sabbath also the congregation were t pleased to have the presence of the Rev. Sidi Browne, the efficient agent of the Co lumbia Female College, who is travelling for 0 0 the advancement of that institution, an in- 0 stitution which will prove, by the blessing of d God. a power in the Church. We are Pleased t to say that the College opened under flatter ing prospects. p SaLE-DAr.-Monday last was a big day t for Newberry, which however is not unusual o of late, and since we have outlived the period of little days. But.for the name, every day is a sale day as regards the number of people who love to congregate here, and only when the elements conspire to prevent does the town lapse into its old before the war look. But last Monday was a bigger day. Beside the innumerable auctions of dry goods, gro ceries, shoes, horses, males (the trade in stock being larger than ever before,) lands, a houses, etc., there were scores of chicken, C wood and cotton wagons, then Dr. Warren b & Co's., palace pavillion, just in rear of the b Boulevard de Mollohon, then the fried mack- a erel, pea-nut, ginger-cake, and apple vendors, h in and through which, bespattered with mud, and armed with pencil and paper, every now and then could be seen, a representative of the Herald, or the Progressive Age, on the c war path. Unusual excitement was seen 0 around the tax collectors ofice, while a large i number of other collectors'of small bills, J helped to keep the crowd in motion. And e this was not all. There was much done in Y the way of whiskey straights, with crooked p results, (happy to say the Herald maintained t! its dignity.) Talk of business !
