A tight colored brother who went to his roost singing from Greenland's icy mountains, awoke next morning and believed he was there for sure. There is no.doubt about the genuineness of this cold snap. DICKENS' BEST THOUGETS. -We are pleased to acknowledge receipt of No. 6, the last number of the Cyclopedia of the Best Thoughts of Charles Dickens, from the pub lishing house of E. J. Hale & Co., New York. When bound it will make not only a beautiful but valuable addition to the library. 4 To all who have not yet subscribed we say do so at once. _____ Sxow.-A lovely fall of snow carpeted this County on Tuesday night last, and during the whole of Wednesday and a portion of Tbursday, lay white and dry upon the ground, so cold was the weather. A slight thaw or Thursday afternoon put it in a melting con dition. In conseouence of the extreme cold there was no 'baliing' that we saw. This is the first snow of the season, and a pretty good beginning. _____ .WARRANTED.-Young man if you want a wife, go and buy a handsome toilet set, or something else of a beautiful character, froni Dr. Fant, and present it, Christmas or Newa Year's day. If you have a wife, and she is a good one, show your appreciation of her qualities by a present; if she is contrary, and says 'nay' when you would have her say 'aye,' make her a present, and see if you don't effect a cure instanter. Try it; it wit: work like a charm in either case. CARoi,rA Fzartz,IzEa.-We take pleasure in calling attention to the advertisement of Messrs. Geo. WV. Williams & Co., which announces the prices, both cash and time, of the celebrated Carolina Fertilizer. Our farmers are all ac quainted with the merits of this popular manure --if not they should he-and we can only advise them to send in their orders early that they may be supplied in proper time, either to Messrs. A. J. MCaugrin& Co., agents at Newberry C H., orMsrs. H. S. Boozer & Co., agentsat Frog Level. ______ BENEFIT oF- ADVERTISING.-On Satur day last we lost a valuable pair of eye-glass es, and determined forthwith to advertise, when to! at once they were forthcoming. Tihere was virtue In the very thought of do ing so. On the other hand, a few weeks agoa much prized duck, a beautifully mottled or brownish speckled thing, strayed from out our gate. It was the only one we had of that species. It has not been seen since, and why ? because we did not advertise. No longer wilt we hesitate. If that duck has not yet been served up on somebody's table, we will give a very liberal reward for it. Christmas is comin3, do bring it in. Unas.-With deep regret we announce the sudden death of Mr. Wilson Caldwell, of this county, a prominent, esteemed and use ful citizen. His death occurred on Friday night after only a few hours illness, and of meningetis, we learn. On Tuesday last, the only child of Mr. and ~'Mrs. John Housea1, was suddenly stricken Vdown and in a few hours breathed its last. It was but eight months old. On Wednesday last Mr. Lenn Morgan, an ex-citizen of this county, and well known at at one time as the proprietor of the Newberry Hotel, died at the residence of his son-in-aw, Mr. E. K. Schumpert, in this county. On Thursday a singular and three-fold mortality occurred in the Caldwell neighbor hood, some 8 or 10 miles from town, in the death of three colored people. One in the morning, and the second, just after as sisting in laying out the first, in the af tertnoon, and the third some time in the nigh t. The third victim was quite old, and had taken part in preparing supper the night she died. The discase it is said, was also Meningetis, and only ran a course of ' four or five hours. On Sunday night the venerable Mrs. Glenn died at her residence, near Beth Eden Church. Yrs. Glenn was aged about 86 years, and /the widow of Dr. G. WV. Glenn, deceased. Unusually beloved by all who knew her, she has died fuLl of years spent in good deeds, The following is a l6t of Letters held for postagein the Newberry P. 0.: Miss Eliza R. Mims. TzEA-NECTAR.-Mr. Lawrence Marshall among other articles, nearly all of which has been named in his general Budget for Christ mas, has a supply of Thea-Nectar, which by singular oversighthe neglected to classify. We therefore take the liberty of calling at tention toit, and at the same time declare, after giving it a fair test, that it is a delicious beverage. Lovers of good Tea will dv well to try a package, and whi-e making the pnr chase look .round at his large and attractive array for the Holidays. CHRISTMAS IS CoMING.-One week more -only intervenes, children, litae boys and lit tle gir!s, for it is of you we are thinking now, between this and the joyous, happy Christmas day, to which yc all look so ex pectantly. Only one week, a short time, but long enough for each one of you who have been at all naughty, to repent in and grow better behaved. We tell you this, be cause Santa Claus is a very particular old fellow, and does not like bad children, and he is always watching you like a cat watches a mouse, but not for the purposre of eating you up, but to shower on you a whole heap of beautiful presents, toys, sweet things, etc., if you are good. If you are bad, though, he will not give much; and when he drives out Christmas eve, with his beautiful little wag on, drawn by six fat little reindeer, he will pass by the houses of every boy and girl who has been naughty, and go to the houses only of the good ones. Remember this, boys and girls, and if you heed it, old uncle Santa Claus will pour more good things into the stockings which you hang up near the fire place, than you ever dreamed of-besides many large things outside which he cannot get into the stockings. Death is no respecter of persons or of age, the tender, innocent babe, as well the strong man, alike must pay the penalty. and thus are the liv- I ing day by day reminded ofthe brevity oflife, the I certainty death. "Leaves have their time to fall, And flowers to wither at the Northwind's breath,c And-stars to set, but all, Thou hast all seasons for thine own, 0 Death !' 1 And "If we knew when friends around us, r Closely press to sy'good bye,'a Which amoB the ista isus, First shoue 'neat the daisies lie," we the oftener would pause and think, get nearer the cross. that we might be ready for the crown.t Little Frank was a sweet child, full of promise,. closeiy entwined in the hearts of its prnts, and on him were centred many fond hopes, which gained new strength as the daily opening of the beautiful bud gae anticipation of the richer beauty of the ful blown flower, but alas the Heavenly Father in His wisdom saw fit to trans plant it to the Eden above, where it will bloomc with unfaiding'loveliness, and in uan lIc purity. 'rwas better tus to die in innocent infancy, for his parents know that their loved one is safe from I the cares, the pains, the sins of maturer life, and as one of the ar.ge band, he awaits their cominir. "Suffer little chilren to comie unto me,'' sait the Saviour, and we-should give them up to His keeping without marmuring, and weep only with hope.
