Things a Farmer Should not Do. A farmer should never keep more cattle, horses, sheep or hogs than he can keep in good order; an animal in high order the first of December is already half win tered. The farmer should never be so immersed in politipal'matters as to forget to sow his wheat, dig his potatoes, and bank up his cellar; nor should he be so inattentive to theim as to remain ignorant of those great questions of national and state policy which will al ways agitate more or less a free people. A farmer should shun the doors of a bank as he would an approach of the plague or cholera. Bank are for men of speculation, and theirs is a business with which farmers should have little to do. A farmer should never be asham ed of his calling; we know that no man can be entirely indepen dent, yet the farmer should re member that if any one can be said to possess that enviable dis tinction, he is the man. No farner should allow the re proach of neglecting education to lie against himself or family, if knowledge is power, the beginning of it should be early and deeply laid in the district school. A farmer should never use ar dent spirits as a drink; if while undergoing severe fatigue, and the hard labors of the summer, he would enjoy robust hcaith, let him be temperate in all things. [Southern Planter and Farmer. BEST TiME TO CUT BUsnEs. Twenty years ago I bought a pasture of good soil, but badly overrun with bushes-roses, black berry, bay-berry, and bar-berry. For several years thereafter, as opportunity occurreo durin.- the summer season, the bushes were cut, and I had a good opportunity to observe the effect upon their life when cut at diffei,-nt times. It was uniformly the case with all kinds, that when they were out in the latter part of August or early in September, they were most in jured if not killed by the pro eeding. The rnses wereiuar ly all killed by one cutting at that season. and the barberry, especially those of large growth and which were in fruit, never sent up a sprout from the stump or root. The barberry and blatk berry were more difficult to era diente with the scythe, but were then, and are now, zkept down better when cut late in sumnmer' than at any other time. ( urn contident the time mentioned is the best to destroy any plan't by entting up ; arid I think it wvould be more effectual if done before the foliage drops in the aut umn. while the plant is growin an too late for it to make a~ net' growth before winter.-Com'iry Gentleman. To KEEP SwEE.T MIlLK.-The Southern Farmer says that a rea spoonful of tine salt or hor'se radish in a pan of' milk will keep it sweet for several days. Milk can be kept a year or more as sweet as when taken from the cow, by the following method: Procure bottles, sad as they are filled, immediately cork them well and fasten the cork with pack thread or wire. Then spread a little straw at the bottom of a boiler, on which place the bottles with straw between them urt il th.e boiler contains a sufficient quantity. Fill up with cold wa ter. and as soon as it b'egins to boil draw the fire and let she whole gradually cool. When quite cold take the bottles and p)ark them in sawdust in hampers and stow them away in the coolest part of the house. CELERY AS A %ERVINE.-A cor respondent of the Practical Far-| mer says: "I have known many men, and women too, who, from I various causes, had become so muclh affected with nervousnes, that when they stretched out their hands they shook like aspen leaves on windy days; and by a dlaily moderate use of the blanched foot stalks of the celery leaves.,as a salad, the became as strong and steady in limbs as other pleI. i have known others so very nervous that the least annoyance put them~ in a state of aitation, who were ini almost constant per plexity and fear, and who were effectually cured by a daily mode rate use of blanched celery as a salad at mealtimes. I have known others cured by using celery for palpitation of the heart. WHAT IT TAKEs.-It takes elev en pounds of milk to adId one pound1( l.ve weigtht to a calf;. and an ox that weighs one thousa~nd three thousand p)ounds will con sume twenty-tw Ound of Ihav in twenty-four hours to keep fromn l..sin'g weight. If he is to fatten, he must have just twice that quantity, when he will gain two pounds a day. This is one. pounrd live weight for eleven pounids oif good hay. To obtain lifty cents a hundred for his hay, a far mer must sell fait steers at five dollar' and fifty cents per hundred pous.'c E ET-r acKES.-Twelve pounds of fruit, six pounds sugar. arid a gnart of c'.der Vinegar, eloves and (1inamTfon.
