The Abbeville and Anderson County Fairs begin on the 30h inst., an,! close on the first, proximo. A Cyclopedia of the Best Thoughts of Charles Dickens, by DeFontaine. We have received from the pubishers, E. J. Hale & Co., a copy of F. G. DeFon taine's Cyclopedia of the best thoughts of Ghar!es -Dickens, carefully compiled and alphabetically arranged. This is a raluable and interestiing enterprise, and exactly suits the spirit of the age. We must learn to epitomise ; to winnow, and then present the gist, pith and puint of a principle,-the metaphur, aphorism and epigram, Uithout the least unnecessary verbiage. Men, to-day, in the rush aid roar of business, abstract thought and munl1tiplying cares, cannot plough through Saharas, when they need refreshing rest and recreation ; they must find the inviting oasis at once. Mr. Felix DeFontaine, who is a grace ful, strong and fluent writer, and who, by virtue of his experience as a jour nalist, is happily suited to this style of wo:k, has rendered a good service to the great reading 1ublic. We ijoie that his field of en.terprise may be enlarged. The Election. The e!ection, in this Cour.ty, we are pleased to say, pascd off quietly and WithOut any disturbance bet,een pai tics. This speaks well, and gives hope of a better futute in po litical contests, that the mad passions and pr-judic(s of the majority are not so ea.ily brought to the surface by party leaders as in times past, and that a bet ter feeling really exists. The result, as to the vote in this County is what might have been expected-the e%vction of th entire straight Repub'ican ticket, but not as to the majority, for that migh. and should, have been very materialh lessened.
