This road aa sold on Slonday Iast, (5th
ins.*,) and was botight in by MNissrs. Wor
thingtott, Hardy Solotnou. & Co. The
scene at the sale is described as being quite
lively, and three times was it pIt up and
knocked off, until it tinially became the
property of the above natned party. It
was first knocked oI to the -ate Auditor
for $654,oull, but his warrant on the State
Treasurer for the cash son deaInded not
being deemed good, it was agaii put up,
and again the State Auditor was the pur

We published in our last issue, by request,
a document relating to a Conaven:ion in Cin
cinnati about putting a religious amendmnent
so the Constitutionl. We did so in order
that our readers might see whither the coun
try drifts.
In the beads of the addresses before the
Convention--founld above--appears the fol
lowing :
"TMhe Political Messaship of Jesus."
"The Impossibility of neutrality in our gov
ernment tow is Christianity." '' fhle pro
posed amendment no step toward uniting
Church and State, nor any infringemeut o)f
the rights of conscicure."
To some, at a casual glance, these tnon
strous fallacies might have a plausibi!e
semblance of truth. But they unerringiy
point to the dreadful tendencies of the age.
"The political Messiship of Jesus." What
an awful heresy. The Savior distinctly states
that His Kingdom belongs not to earth
with its flesh pots and ponmps. That Caesatr
should have that which is his own, &c.
And if the governmient is not neutral to
wards Christianity, then 'where is the vitality
of Chrisianity-Charity--which is its all-per
vading, pure white light ? Atnd whaut of the
Rights of Conscencee? For where will amand
the Israelite,&c.? Atnd then as this new phase
of the madness of P'uritanic :nsendental
lsm and higher-law sweeps and surges into
an angry, seething flood of fanaticis-m, who
shall ;ell the limits of its licen'e ? Will there
not trring issues as to whether Catholics or
Protestants are Christiarns? And if the fvr
mer, then which division of the Church-t he
Greek or the Iloman ? if Protestantism, then
which sect? The F.piscopal or the P'rceby :e
rian Church ? if the Raptists or the Metho
dists, which branch ? The Wesleyan or :he
