What Profit does its Use Pay the Plantei for the Money Invested ? Tins is a practical question. It is a ques 'ion of no less importance to us as inanufac turers and sellers, than to the planters wh< .re the buyers of the Guano. An answei ight be given to this question by referenc< the fact that, since its introduction to the lanters of the South, its consumption ha1 steadily increased from a few hundred tons, the frst year of its Hee, to inany thousands of tons *hd that notwithstanding an annual increas( of facilities for its production, the Company has been heretofore unable to furnish supplief to meet the increasing demand. This fact il] te testified to by hundreds who have been un ~ble to purchase supplies. It certainly may :e assumed, that if ita' use had not proved ~rofitable, its consumption would not have *ontinued and increased. 'But we propose to answer the above enquiry in a more direct and demonstrative manner, by showing not only that the use of this Guanc pays the planter for the money invested, but by showing also howv, and how much profit is realized from its use, wvit.h cotton selling at the present low price. We propose to show by figures voluntarily given by planters who ap plied it to the last crop, that its use paid a profit on the money invested in its purchase, with cotton as low as 18 cents per pound, which is not andl cannot be realized in any business enterprise known. Investments which pay a profit of from 12 to 15 per cent, per annum are eagerly soughit after, but we are able to show, in a manner that cannot be controverted or set aside, taking for our facts, as a basis of calculation, "the voluntary and disinterested testimony of planters themselves, that the monay invested in the purchase of ANo COMPAI N 8. REESE & CO., CENERA SOLUBLE PACIFIC GUANO has paid the planter a net profit of from 100 to 700 per cent.; or, in other words, that for every dollar expended, from 2 to 7 dollars have been received in return in a period of eight months from the time the investment was made. This may appear to be atn extravagant state ment, but we do not make it without having at hand the means of demonstrating its truth and we invite an examination of the annexed' calculations, from which the truth of the state mont will appear. We must have f icts to start with. If we know the quantity of cotton produced by the use of the Guano over and above the capacity of the soil without the Guano, it is not a diffi cult calculation to approximate very nearly the exact profit the use of the Guano has paid the 1 planter, on the money invested for its purchase. t! We must obtain knowledge of the fact as to the increase of production from planters who used the Guano. Certainly their testi mony must be accepted as reliable and sufi 11cient, for it is the disinterested testimony of 3 competent witnesses, with the probabilities of an under rather than an over-estimate. We publish in another part of this paper, a large number of letters from planters in various 1 parts of the Cotton States. They do not all state the increase produced by the Guano, -? hence we can only include those in our calcu latiuns which give results in figures, but the number is ample to answer the purpose de signed. In order to make an exact statement, we _ should have figures giving, first, the number of pounds of Guano used per acre; scond/y, the ex:ict number of pounds of cotton picked from the guanoed land ; and, thirdly, the exact ii-umber of pounds picked from the same land without Guano. Where these three facts are stated, we use them in our calculations as given. In those instances where the increase only is stated, we have to assume the average quantity the land would produce without the Guano, and the quantit.y of Guano used per acre. Hence, in these instances, we assume the soil to be ca pable of producing, as an average, 150 pounds lint cotton per acre. We base this assumption E upon inquiries diligently made from various persons capable of judging, which is the best information we can procure, and it cannot be far out of the way. Where the -quantity of j Guano applied, per acre, is not given, we as sume 200 pounds were used as the average. This is prob,bly over the average quantity, as we know many instances where less was applied. If a planter has land that will produce with out Guano 150 pounds of lint cotton, and the I same land yields an increase of 100 per cent., or, in other words, his crop is doubled by the I use of 200 pounds of Solusbie .Pus|ic Guano, it is an easy and simple calculation to show the i profit made on the inve.-tment, putting the market value of cotton at any given figure, say at 13 cents per pound.I For example, 100 per cent, increase on the I natural product of 150 pounds lint is a gain of 150 pounds of lint, which is worth, at 13 cents 1F pe~r pound, $10.50. Deduct from this the cost of 200 pounds of Guano, say at $70 per ton, which is $7, and we have the exact profit real- ~ ized ; which, in this case, would be $12.50 as the net profit resulting from the investment I The per Ccn/umr of profit made is arrivedl at by dividing the amount investedI, into the y amount of niet profit realized ; hence, divide thie cost of 200 pounds of Guano, at $7, into the gain, in this case $12.50, and you have the I per centum made on the invest'ment, wvhich is a fraction over 1'8 per cent. i Thie correctness of this method of calculation D cannot be disputed, and the results are in ey- a itate. however surprising they may appear. f ID. i WM. It will >e seen, as sttyted above, that the profit realized anges from 100 to '100 per cent., averaging 393 >er cent. It is doubtless true there are ex options to these results, but they aro few, and xceptions only, and are duo to obscure causes, vhich we cannot be expected to explain, The uality and composition of the Guano is pre isely the same in all cases, hence, where ex eptional results are had, they must necessarily )C due to some local incidental causes, and not o the Guano. The results given are concur eut and general, and have been realized for a cries of years, notwithstanding the contingen ies of seasons, such as excessive drought, cx ressive rain, late cold spring, attacks (f cater 0llar, rust, <dc., <.c. If these results are true, to only one-half wvhat they are shown to be, can any planter ifrord to dispense with the use of Solulle Pa -ific Guano.f JOHN S. REESE & CO. In cases where the ,lanter does not state the yield of the soil un ertilized, it is assumed that the average would >e, say, 150 pounds of lint per acre.
