If it is true that an application of Peruvian Guafio, which costs the planter thirty dollars -more per ton,.produces no lar$er increase of ,crop per acre than 2oluble Pafic Guano,'(and Mwhich, .besides, renders the crop liable t? greater disaster if drought intervene.) If thUs be true, it is certainly a matter of individual and general importance. S 1first-Because its use in place of Peruviat Guano would save to the planters of the j8outhern States a very large sum of mopey., .It is estimated that fifty thousand' tons of :Peruvian Guano are sold in the United StaJtes per annum, and it is all bou hlt by the South ern 'nd Middle Atlantic S3ates; hence the actual saving in money to the farmers' and planters of these States, in the use of B9oluble ,Pacfc Gtuano, wgould be $1, 500,000 ; and in the nte ca,se more than *8,000,000 of gold arc frained from the agricultural districts of the tuountry to replenish the treasiiry of Peru, ~while in the other the outlay remains in thle country to contribute to the general welfare. If true, it is important, cecondly, because the use of 50,000 Tons Soluble~Paciflc Guano Would furnish to the soil to which it was 1applied,e eighteen to twenty thousand tons of .Phosphate ofLime, while the same quantity of Peiuvian Guano furnishes only twelve thousand tons of the same important element, which is 'so necessary to permanent improvement, In 'other words. the use rf this Guano would giv the soil six thouand tom more of Pho8phate of Lime, at an actual saving in cost to the country of $1,500,000.. Certainly if Phosphate of Lime has value as an element of fen'tility, eighteen thousand tons is worth more to agriculture than twelve thousand tons; hence if it be true that an equal weight of this Guano, applied to cotton or corn, produces as great an increase of crop as results from Peruvian' Guano, and better results 'if the 'seasoi' be visited by droiight; then it is of the highest importance to every consumer of Guano. HAS SOLUBLE PACIFIC GUANO Fertilizing value equal to Peruvian Guano? There are two methods of arriving at the truth o a question of this' kind. R IHRDSON, It is not impossible there may be excep tional- cases of 'different experience, but we venture to -inbmit that it would be simply impossible to acquire such a volume of testi mony from such a variety of persons and extent of territory, if it were not truc that the fertilizing power of this Gzano is equal to that of Peruvian Guano, as a rule, and. in certain contingencies of season actually superior. The pimnciple which governs the method of application to various crops, is found in a knowledge of the character of the roots of the plant to which it is appliedl. The guano must be so placed in the soil that the small fibrenous roots, which are the feeders, may find it at all stages of the crop. Cotton has a tap root, which penetrates the soil and furnishes support for the weed.. From this tap root a multitude of small fibrenous roots branch off in every direction, extending, at the maturity of the crop, from two to three feet or more from the tap; through - these, fine fibres the plant receives all its nutrition that is drawn from the 'soil. If all the gua'no applied be placed in the hill or drill, its full benefit will not be realized by the plant ; because, after its early growth0 its feeders will a.ve on be yond the place of its 'eposit. Henoe, the best method, as dictated by the nature of the mat ter, and confirmed by experience, is to' apply one-third to a half of the quantity ti4d Uy atrewing it in the hill or drill, under the seed, atd sowing the other two-thirds or half broadcasbe fore the'plows, when the orop comes to a' sthnd, or is about five to 'six inches high. The profit to the planter arising from the oulttra of cotton, is exactly the difierence between wbgt. it costs per pound to produce it, and, what Is realIxpd per pound from its sale in the markets. The c at per ,pound of a crop to the planterp is governed entirely by the quantity he realizes per' acre from the land cultivated, because the expenditure for labor is ndArly or quite the same, whet1ter theproluct bp a bal a(wr,-or a balo frm threm acre, )ut the cost of the pro duct to the planter is materially different. If one planter gets a bale fom tO're4 acres and estl. mates the cost of his cotton to be twelvo cents per pbnd, and another planter gets three bales from three acres, without additional labor, then it Is.clear, that the cost per pound to the latter, should not ex eced four ccnts per ,pound.
