One of the mopt painfulcircumstances connect ed with the heroic defence of Charle ton, during Its three years of tiege, is to be found In the fact, that during all this time, there were persons in the city, "in high life," who were engaged as spivs in sending information to the besiegers. Drawings of the fortiacations were farnished, weak points noted. and the movement of troops indicated as soon as begun, and the fieet notised of the time of arrival and departure of blockade running ves-els. So cautious-y did these emis saries of the enemy conduct their work, ttrat for a long time the skill of the most eminent detea tives n as baffed in their endeavors to break up the illicit correspondence. These spies were the source of extreme annoyance to the Command ers in Charleston, and theinformati,on they were ena led to furnish, often thwar ed their best maA tured designs upon the enemy.
