The princi, paU scenes of this story are laid in Charleston and vicinity, and the story cannotfail to prove interesting to all who are familiar with the eveits which occurred in that locality during the late war. One of the most painful circumstances connect ed with the heroic defeuce ot'Charle ton. during its three years of siege, is to be ftuid in the fact, that during all this time, there were persons in the city, "in high lite." who were eniaged as spies ip sending information to the besiegers. Drawings of the fortiscations were furiiished, weak points noted. and the movement of troops indicated as .%ooin as begun, and the fleet notified of the time of arrival and departure of blockade tutiing ves-els. So cautions.y did thefe emis satries of the enemy conduct their work, that for a long time the !kill of the most eminent detej tives was baffied in their endeavors to break up the illicit correspondence. These spies were the souice of extrenie annoyance to the Command ers in Chai les-ton, and the information they were ena- led to furnish, often thwar ed their best ma tured designs upon the enemy. As a proof ot th- cornpleteness of this conspiracy, it may be remarked. that the daily papers of the city were frequently read on board the blockade fleet, the sam. day of their publication. The sur render of General Lee's Army in 1865, finds them again among the Santee hills, where the narrative closes.
