A Pa ?Wrass.-t;av oui pur chesed any intoxicating liquor of The 'de fendant ?" inquiredthe constble. "Not th4 1 remember " replied the witness, coolly. "Have you obtained any.at his store ?" "Not that I remember, ' "Will you try and recollect? Bear in mind that you are tinder oath." "I am trying." A pause. "Well witness, what do you say now ?" continued the official presently. "I haven't made any discoveries asyet." "Have you not, within a week, told persons that you bought liquor of defend. ant ?" "Not that I remember." "Did you not tell me yesterday that you bought spirits of defendant ?" "Yes, sir." "You did ! Ah I Well, sir when you told me that, did you lieor tell the truth ?" "I told the truth." "Well, sir, then you have bought spirits of defendant?" "Yes sir." "What did you mean by swearing you could not remember ?" "I meant that I could not." "Your memory returned amazingly quick. Did you pay defendant for the spirits you bought of him. ?" "Yes, sir." "How much ?" "Twenty-five cents." "What kind did you buy?" "Spirits of camphor." "Ahem ! we i est the case here." "Not guilty," came from the jury box, as the members tried to appear sedate and dignified, and with an effort re strained themselves from joining in the roar of laughter that went round the court-room. ADTVANCE IN AGRICULTURE.-In an admirable article on the above subject, the editor of the American Farmer says that if we would lay a firm basis on which to build up wisdom and knowledge in the minds of our planters, large and small, we must convince them- that the course pursued by our forefathers in husbandry, is by no means the best course. And he would convince them fret, that in general, a small farm is better than a large one. Second, convince them that a little, well tilled, is better than much, half tilled. Convince them that two loads of manure are better than one, and every lead, judiciously applied, is better than a greenback dollar. Convince them that three good' cows are better than six poo; ones, and so on of all other stock. Convince them that two blades of grass may easily be made to grow where but one only grew before. Convince them that experiment is the mother of i:nprovement, and improve ment thie true source of wealty ; and lastly, convince them of these simple trutbs, and induce them to practice ac cordingly, and the work is done. You will then bring mind and body to act in unison. You will elevate the hus bandman to his natural sphere in the scale of existence. You will place hina oa the road to higher eminence. He wHil think for himself, he will be learn ed, he will be wise, he will be wealthy and influential. Rev. Henerv Ward Beecher's farm and bomne, at Peeskill, is- thus de.scribed by a corr'espondent: The farm is about two miles east of the railroad depot, and. a beautiful iite for a summer residence. The residence is a low roofed, one story-and-a-half building, and resembles very much an old-fashion ed farm house. The carriage house and barn and foreman's residence are all one edifice. In external appearance, this building is more imposing than Mr. Beecher's home. The farm consists of about forty acres, and I am told its cost may be estimated at forty thousand dollars. When Mr. Beecher purchased it, it was ca#ered with rocks and stones, but he bas made it bloom and blossomu with flowers, and so enriched its soil that it yields prodigious harvest. The farm is a garden ; the whole of it has been subsoiled twenty-five inches, and every stone, large or small, has been taken out and put into fences or drains. I never saw such vegetables and fruit. He has four acres of onions, and last year sola eight hundred barrels; the foreman told me he sold last year about ten thousand dollaas worth of produce from the place. Such onions, beets, squashes and d warfed pears 1 never before witnessed ; one small pear tree, not three feet high, had fifty seven pears on it, and many other trees seemed loaded with their fruit. CoumEIT[oN.-The Richmond papers lose no opportunity of poking fun at their neighbors of Petersburg, to which the papers of the Cockade city respond promptly. The following is the latest correspondence passing between them: PETERSBURG TRAD10 LooKING UP. Twenty-three bags of peannts (said to be very fine), arrived at the Southern de pot, Petersburg, on Tuesday, by the early train.--.Richmond Times. Undoubtedly true, but you ought to have told the whole truth about this pea culiar circumstance, neighbor. Tbey were consigned to a Richmond merchant, and bought ftor the "Ooobernut ovill Mansion," asi a substitute for coffee, which has "riz" in the caj.ital.-Peters borg Inder. Petersburg is ahead, so far, but we eek for a broadside fron. Richmond ere on. dent has issued a proclamation, recoao meidiog that bhursday, November 29, be observed tbroag1iout the country as a day of thanksgiving and praise to Almighty God, who has been pleased to vouchsafe to uq as a peeople another year of that natural life which isan indispensa ble aonsideration of peace, security and progress ; that the rear has, moreover, beep Crowned with many peculiar bless ings_; the civil war that so recently closed among us has not been anywhere re-opened ; foreign intervention has ceased to excite alarm or apprehension; intrusive pestilence has been benignly mitigated; domestic tranquility has improved; sen timents of conciliation have largely pre vailed, and affections of loyalty and pa triotirm have been widely renewed. Our fields have yielded quite abundantly, our mining industry has been richly reward ed, and we have been allowed to extend our railroad system far into the interior recesses of this cotntry, while our com merce has resumed its customary activity in foreign seas. These great natural blessings demand a national acknowledg ment. He recommends, also, that on the same solemn occasion the people do humbly and devoutly implore God to grant to our national councils and to our whole people that Divine wisdom which alone can lend any nation into the ways of all good. Is A BROKEN NECK CJRABLE.-A Lon don, lelter in the Chicago Evening Jour nal has the following : The old saying that there is no cure for a broken r eck, has just been practi cally disapproved by a surgeon at Green ock. He was called in ti, see a young girl who had jist fallen a distance of 18 feet, and thoroughly dislocated her neck. When he reached her, the face was near ly reversed, and looking over the back. He promptly supported the back with the left knee, took a grasp of the head, and began to pull gradually and prettv strong, whereupon the girl's eyes opened and there was an effort at breathing. In creasing the pressure the parts suddenly came to their natural po.4tion, and after a minute or two regular breathing was established. Close attention was afterward paid to the case, and after much fever and occasional convulsions, the child r ecovered and is now as well as ever. 4OO LMNIK SLL Impoter an hlsl elr O~rIN Notheap orer atn g hoeale aketres Charleston, S. 0.
