Chester.?There was a meeting of the city council to consider an ordinance to grant a franchise to Clawson Bachman, of Philadelphia, Pa., to furnish gas for illuminating purposes and power purposes and if the city so wishes after a lapse of five years from the date of the construction to illuminate its streets. The ordinance passed first reading. Spartanburg.?A large green worm is playing havoc with cotton in certain sections of the county. J. R. The worm resembles the cut worm though larger and of a pale green color. It attacks the be* and destroys it completely. Winnsboro.?There was an enthusiastic meeting of town and Fairfield county people present at the court house for the purpose of forming an alfalfa club. Short, inspiring talks were made by Messrs. Briggs and Johnson of Rock Hill. The club was formed with J.'Q. Davis as president, and Howard Lemmon, assistant farm demonstrator, secretary anad treasurer. A carload of lime has been hauled in for the purpose of distribution. ! Sumter.?Sumter people are glad of j the new extension of service over ! the Atlantic Coast Line that now gives an afternoon train to Columbia. Heretofore whenever Sumter people j wanted to visit the big sister city they had either to go over ei'.rly in the morning or late at night and had to j come back either early in the after- i noon or dreadfully early in the morning. By the new schedule one can go i over at 5 o'clock in the afternoon | and returning can leave Columbia at | S: 20 1n the morning. Lexington.?Four candidates have been announced for mayor of Lexington in the election to be held on November G. They are: T. C\ Callison, a lawyer, being the junior member of the law firm of Thurmond, Timiner- ! man & Calliaou; James E. Rawl, one of the oldest residents of Lexington, having grown up with the town and now a retired business man; Charles E. Taylor, a clerk of Scott Hendrix, and Capt. L. W. Redd, superintendent of the Lexington Mfg. Co. Georgetown.?A land deal of the sort that means much for the develop- j ment of Georgetown county has just i been concluded between the Dixie | Development Company, W. M. Mor- j I ton, president, and Lawrence McClennan, of Wadesboro, N. C. Spartanburg.?The City Democratic | executive committee ruled that citij zens were not eligible to vote in the j second municipal primary unless | their poll tax was paid six months ago. This ruling will disqualify many 1 citizens, who for the sake of voting, paid their delinquent poll tax during the last few weeks.
