The vote was 151 to 35.
A. M. Bateman, the rural policeman
shot in Sumter county on .Saturday by
T. B. Oaugbman, has died, and Cangh-:
man, is in jail. Oaugbman shot the
policeman because he took a jug of
liquor from him. Bateman leives a
wife and three children.
Two brothers, Alex and Charlie
Gray, died at their home in Lamar
Monday night. Alex Gray died at

School Closing.
The Lexington High School will
close its session of 1912-13, on Tuesday,
May 26tb. An elaborate and very interesting
programme has been arrang
ed and. teachers and pupils have been
at work for sometime to do the occasion
justice. Rev. J. E. Bailey, pastor
of the Red Bank Baptist church,
Saluda, will p each the Baccalaureate
sermon on Sunday, May 24, and on
Monday evening at 8.30 o'clock the
literary address will be delivered by
Prof. L. T. Baker, of the Uriveraity
of South Carolina. Ten young- pec pie
will- receive diplomas, making the
largest class in years. The school is
under the superintendence* of W. E.
Black, who is assisted by Miss M. u.
Wingard, Miss Ellen Hendrix, Miss
Mattie Jordan Brown, Miss Kate
Shull, Mrs. W. E. Black. The music
department is under the direction of
Miss May Lois Boozer and Mrs. E. B.
Roof.
Hearing Postponed.
In the inatter of the State vs. about
fifty laborers of the J. G. White Con
straction Co., who are building the
dam, at Parr Shoals, charged with
working on Sundays, the preliminary
hearing which was set for Wednesday
by the Magistrate at Jenkinsville, Fairfield
county, was postponed to a date
to be named on account of the death
of a sister of Mrs. R. H. Welsh. Mr.
Welsh has been employed by the company
to assist in the defense. Geo
Bell Timmerman, Solicitor of this
Circuit, will represent the State at the
hearing.
Brought to Lexington.
A negro answering to the name of
Haywood Taylor, was arrested in
Columbia one day last week and was
brought to Lexington by Sheriff Sim
J. Miller, and lcdged in jail. It is al
l?ged that this is the negro who at- '
tempted to shoot former sheriff Corley,
at Cayce recently, lodging a few
shot in the face.
Little Montenegro has been forced
to yield to the nnja9t ultimatum of
the Powers and will evacuate Scutaria
which she wrested from the Turks after
five months siege at the sacrifice

election will be held at Pelioif School
House, District No. 25, on Monday May
19,1913, for the purpose of voting a special
levy of two (2) mills more for school

Taxpayers are hereby notified that
by an ordinance duly enacted by the
Town Council of the Town of Lexinging,
S. C , a levy of Ten (10) Mills has
been made on all the taxable property
within the corporate limits of said
Town <oc municipal purposes for the
year 1913.
. The tax books will be kept open by j
the undersigned, at his usual place of
business in said town, for the collection
of the said taxes as levied, from
May 1, 1913 to -ay 31, 1913, hpth inclusive,
after which time a penaity of
five (5) per cent, will be added and the
books kept open until June 15, 1913,
for the collection of delinquent taxes
and penalty.
Tax executions will be issued against
all defaulting taxpayers after June 15,
1913, to enforce the payment of all
unpaid taxes.
