The Lexington Dispatch Wednesday, Ft b. 12, 1913. ? M. Habman, Editor and Publisher J. W. Ogilvbe, Assistant Editor Entered at the Post Office at Lexxngton, S. 0., as second class matter CIRCULATION 2.300. Watch Lexington grow. 1 he Corn Show in Colombia will close Friday. Innuendo is the weapon of the paliafknn oris) PrtnTIir(?. IllVUU auu vvn~4>. We have received a letter of inquiry from United States Senator Jonathan Bourne, Jr., in reference to Government aid in building and maintaining the public highways of the country. We have time and again expressed ourself on this subject;. We believe that the Government should bear the entire expense of maintaining rnese roads because it uses them as post roads and it is just as much encumbent upon the Government to do this as it is to mske largt appropriations for the improvement of rivers and harbors. Where is the jnstice in making bones of one public utility and fish of the cfchar? Now that the Corn Show is drawing near its close the thonght naturally comes up, will the farmers put iu practice the lessons sought to be taught by the promoters of this show from the experience of others and object les sons, the value or scienmno iarmiugr Thb South has always been a great agricultural country, but it has only beeo since since the war that the capabilities of its soil as a a food producing country has become to be appreciated, and still more recently its adaptability to the successful production of all kinds of crops understood. And even at this late date we of the South in general and South Carolina in particular are behind the times in this respect. We seem slow in grasping any innovation upon old time customs, especially is this the case in the field of agriculture. But we are awakening to the * importance oi adopting a more economical avstem of farming than that here fcofore practiced?a system that will make two ears of corn grow where bat one grew before at a less amoonb of work and at a less cost of production. Tremendous infloences have been, and are even now being brought to bear upon those who follow the plqw for a livelihood to induce them <to stuiiy well the merits and claims of farming based on scientific principles. The agricultural colleges Which have sprung up in the South, the farm demonstration work fostered and maintained the National Gov? eminent have had a potent and benificent iofiuence upon the farming industry of the country. And added to tbeseare fcho?e uhich have gone out from the Fifth National Corn Show. > ' The gool it has done not alone for the farmers of this State, l?ut those of the nation as well, cannot be estimated and time alone v ill dei velop the results of these agencies whose object is to better the condition and lighten his hardens. We he lieve that those who attended the 8how will profit by the experience of ethers and put inro practice upon their own farms the information they gained at the show. Parcel Post Stamps. Remember that nothing but Parcel Post Stamps will go on parcels for mail. Ordinary postage t?tarc^s will not carry parcels, nor will parcel post stamps carry letters, post card?, circulars, 1 ewspapers or other printed matter. Music and Expression Recital. Mrs. E. B.
