'? > 1- _ 1 ? 4. ? ^ a coraon or omcers wuu nave siuuu guard throughout the night and are waiting for the negro to attempt to force his way to liberty. The negro was shot down by a woman, wife of a storekeeper at Hull Branch crossing, whom lie tried to assault. She shot at him three times and at the third shot the negro fell, but rose again and headed for the deep woods into which he was later tracked by a posse of deputies and citizens. The negro entered the store yesterday afternoon, and no one was present but a woman clerk. He asked her for a drink of water. She handed him a glass and told him to get it at the pnmp. The negro grabbed her and she jerked loose from him, leaving a part of her clothing in his grasp. She rnshed upstairs to her room, the negro following her. She seized a pistol and fired three shots at him. He fell at the third shot and she left him lying on the floor, apparently dying, and ran to the nearest neighbor's house. "When she returned with her neighbor, the negro had gone, leaving a trail of blood, w^ich later was taken up by a posse with two bloodhounds. They traced the negro for eighteen miles into a big swamp near Crescent City Junction. Back in the woods, the dogs lo9t the trail, where the ne-1 gro entered the swamp, vhich is under water. The posse surrounded the swamp last evening and is still there watching for the negro. Subscribe to The Dispatch before the opening of the county campaign and get all the news.
