Sheriff Taliaferro was shot and killed in the courthouse and accusations were immediately turned against Doggins. He fled the town it is alleged and until the time of his arrest had never been heard from. Governor Brown has signed the necessary papers and a depot; sheriff is now on his way for the prisoner. R. AVERY, The Jeweler 1 508 Main St., Columbia, S C. i Selma News Notes. Special to The Dispatch. Selma, April 15.?Since the rains have held up farmers are very busj preparing their land for planting, and find the soil in bad condition?tight and run together?so that the prospect is for much corn and cotton to be planted without getting the ground in proper condition. A very little corn has been planted and no cotton that this writer knows of. Small grain looks fine and with favorable weather conditions a good crop of both oats and wheat will be produced. It is not necessary for me to urge farmers to plant plenty of corn and other food crops, because the price of such products is sufficient proof that we cannot afford to buy corn at a dollar per bushel, and other feed stuffs correspondingly high in price with cotron at 11 cents or any other price; in fact, 1 consider ;it bad policy for farmers to bay feed stuffs at any price with cotton money. It is a pretty well established fact that we can produce these articles cheaper than we can buy them. I mean, of course, under ordinary conditions of weather, etc. Mr. and Mrs. T. E. Daily and their little son, Thomas Edward, of Memphis, Tenn., spent several days last week with the parents of the former, Mr. and Mrs. John T. Daily. Mrs. Perry Wise made a flying visit to her brother, Mr. J. W. Haltiwanger, of Newberry, last Saturday and Sunday. Notwithstanding the fact that we are no* citizens of Richland county, the visits of the dear old Lexington Dispatch are always appreciated. H. Why He Was Late. "What made you so late?" Sold by All Dealers. Acreage Reduced Largely Commissioners of agriculture of seven of the principal cotton States making reports to Col. E. J. Watson, president of the Southern Cotton congress, placed the estimate of reduction of acreage at from 15 to 25 per cent. This reduction in the opinion of Col. Watson has been brought about by the workings of the Rock Hill plan, and the wet season. The information was furnished as a result of a letter sent out a week ago by Mr. Watson to all the cotton states. Replies were received from Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Texas and Tennesson. A similar condition exists in South Carolina. Mr. Watson said that although no official report had been made from Louisiana that the rains had been heavy and a reduction of acreage would be shown. There has been little preparation for the crop in any of the States. < Yon will look a good while before yon find a better medicine for coughs f and colds than Chamberlain's Cough Remedy. I A correspondent of the Calhoun Advance says "the Sandy Run Stocfe Company experienced quite a lieavj loss Sunday when the rushing; waterf of the Congaree river came down very unexpectedly, carrying: off about four hundred dollars worth of hogs. Owing to the continued freshets the company has been unable to build a mound or provide protection for the stock in any way. The old Indian mound, however, has been the means of saving stock previous to last week's high waters. This mound is hundreds of years old s,nd should be numbered amcng the wonders of Calhoun county. Many Indian fossils, suchv as arrows, beads and pottery, have been dug out of this mound by various people, the last party being a professor of Trinity College, Durham, N. C."
