Pearsons, the great Chicago philanthropist, who has made the benefactions of Rockefeller, Carnegie and otners look, in proportion, petty. While they only give a portion of their vast income, Dr. Pearsons has practically freed himself of his entire fortune, $0,000,000. Early last week he went into retirement at the Holiday sanitarium with, only an income of $6,000 a year to supply his J _ _ t * 1 1* . -W1 neeas me remainder or nis lire. ?ie was 91 years old April 14. There is but one transaction that Dr. Pearsons has to close before he leaves. Today, or b, Wednesday at least, fie wiil put up his beautiful estate at Hinesdaie at auction. The highest bidder will get the house and contems. Following this act, Dr. Pearsons will enter the sanitarium, and in the society of a few chosen friends will awa.t the end of his career. Dr. Pearsons' health Las been remarkably good, and he proposes to take the best care of himself and to be constantly under the scrutiny of physicians. In the company of friends, reading, walking ana watching the growth of the institutions he has founded or endowed, are to be his amusements. Dr. Pearsons characterizes the sum he has given to the colleges as hi* debts. 'When my house is sold," he declared, "and. my last debt is paid, I shall have leea my own executor, and shall have closed my estate entirely. There will be no dispuse after I have gone; that is what I want to be sure ' of. I propose to get ahead of my friends, Rockefeller and Carnegie, and make provisions for a complete clpan-up." His advice to young men who are ambitious to reach the ripe old age is: * Keep the ten commandments. "Go to bed early and sleep eight hours. \ "Don't worry. /'Eat moderately of wholesome food. "Avoid ill-temper and all, extremes of emotion." ^ Your Neighbor's Experience How you may profit by it. Take Foley Kidney Pills. Mrs. E. "Church Should Advertise Tn Q CdTmnn nn 'CK/wilA fV.? V. Advertise?'' at the Hanover Street Congregational ohnrci , Milwaukee, Wis., the Rev. F. Stanley Parks urged all churches to settle on some campaign and then advertise. As the divine warrant for church advertising he quoted Matthew v, 16, which reads, "Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your Father which is in heaven." "The churclr is Cod's great business center," said he. "Many of the pastors and churches make a mistake in failing to recognize that a newspaper is under no obligation to give them space. Even the advertisers secure no favors in* the editorial columns of a real newspaper. It degrades the church in the eyes of men to be begging for notices, petty puffs and items on insignificant meetings or achievements. There are communities where the church and its ministers have begged meaningless fl? n ery when at the same time the press is criticised and where no note of graritude ever found its way to an editor's table." Tne South Carolina Good Road9 association will meet in Spartanburg in August. Plans are on foot for the building of. a new dormitory for Wofford college, Spartanburg, to have 75 or 80 rooms and to cost $40,000 to $50,000. A verdict of $300 was given Manning Williams by a Spartanburg jury against the Pauline oil mill for the loss of three fingers while working in the mill. He sued for $5,000. Rouse all tby strength and all thy skill, Carolina! Hold np the glories of thy dead; Say now thy elder children bled, And point to Eataw's battle-bed, Carolina!
