Special to The Dispatch. Chapin, Nov. 19.?Chapin W. C. T. U. met at the home of the president, Mrs. Cha9. P. Robinson, Tuesday evening, November 15. The programme wa9 devoted to the department of scientific temperance instruction and the meeting was presided over by Miss Maude Farr, the accomplished superintendent of the department discussed. The teachers of Chspia High School were present at this meeting and "Some Essentials for Best Results from Scientific Temperance Instruction," was ably discussed by Prof. Odus C. Kibler. The law requiring scientific temperance instruction taught in the public schools of South Carolina, was read hv Miaa Fthpl HHnp. A paper emphasizing the value of the prize contest, was read by Miss Lenore Henry, it being decided to hold a prize essay contest in Chapin High School at an early date. Mr9. H. L. Henry, one of the delegates to the State convention in Georgetown, gaye a very interesting talk on the convention, showing the growth and progress of the woik of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union, and paying a beautiful tribute to the convention speaker, Mrs. .Florence E. Atkins, of Tennessee. The programme was in<er9persed with bright, stirring temperance songs. Shoots Only Son With a Winchester. A special to The State from Leesville on Ihursday said: In an effort to protect his mother from a brutal attack made on her by his father, young Troy Banks, liying two miles *frorn Leesville, was shot and seriously wounded last night. Lee Banks, the husband and father, has been the ' error of the community for the past five years and frequently beat his wife and drove her from their home to spend the night at any place she could obtain shelter. Young . Banks, who is now a bright lad of 17 years, last night attempted to help his I mother, but Lec Banks, in a drunken p rage, took a gun and drove his son E off. Running at full speed he was shot in the left leg and fell some dis- j tance from the house. Physicians ] who were summoned found the bones I so shattered that amputation was ft necessary. I After the operation was oyer Banks assaulted Dr. Riser, a young physi- i cian from Leesvilie, who had charge of the case. An altercation ensued in which Dr. Riser received some slight , bruises. Banks was arrested and carried to Lexington this morning. Troy Banks is a manly lad and has been working hard in order to secure an education. Brief News Notes. Charleston expects a large increase in the fertilizer trade this year. An 11-year-old boy has been found guilty of manslaughter in Bamberg. Manley, of the Texas national guard, was sentenced to 09 years in prison for stabbing a man to death with a gun bayonet. Mrs. Harriet Turner, of Scranton, Pa., killed herself and 15-y ear-old daughter. Eighty-five cadets at West Point military academy will be denied Christmas holiday for hazing an officer. Sixty-six thousand railroad ties have been shipped from Austrailia for .. use in this country. I John Lewis, 40, shot and killed his son, aged 17, at Lexington, Ky. The boy hit his father in the head with a hatchet.
