Many ladies graced tt occasion with their presence. All < the candidates were present excej Mr. Hyatt for governor and Attorne j General Lyon. I There were no special featun j aside from the tremendous and heart ! ovation given Congressman A. I ! Lever, who is being opposed for r< I! election by Dr. W. W. Ray of Kiel land. Mr. Lever spoke for more tha an hour and was repeatedly cheere throughout his speech. When h concluded there were lusty shout i from all over the building, which eel j oed and reechoed for several minute: j It was a little after 11 o'clock whe i County Chairman D. F. Efird calle the meeting to order. The invocatio was offered by the Rev. B. D. Wessir ger of Gilbert, after which the cand - dates for lieutenant goyernor ac dressed the audience. E. W. Duva i led off, followed by C. A. Smith. Th former stands for local option and th latter for statewide prohibition. Attorney General Lyon being at sent his opponent, B. B. Evans, wa introduced. The speaker entered int a scathing arraignment of the attoi ney general, charging that office with not living up to his promise j made four years ago, and with squai j dering the people's money. He sai that the attorney general had eve / charged the State for his shoeshine I and for a boy carrying his grip on th j streets of Columbia. He read from I list of figures which he had compile showing how much money had bee spent for attorneys hire outside of th State. He received applause. The candidates for railroad com missioner?G. H. Mahon, O. C. Scai borough, James Cansler and McDuffi Hampton?next addressed the voters each iaying claim to the office by rea son of his qualifications. T. G. He ded clared that he took a drink whenever n lie wanted it, but had never been drunk in his life. Mr. Blease received j_ generous applause, j. C. C. Featherstone, who ran on the 11 prohibition platform twelve years age e when it was not popular as it is today, e was greeted with applause. He at once entered into a discussion of the liquor question, 9tating that he had g no appologies to make for his posi0 tion. It was the paramount issue and he proposed to stick to it even if he r went down in defeat. He favors bi(S ennial sessions of the legislature and i- stands for four-year terms for all state d and county officers.
