This philosophy was expound* d by Mrs. Mary Duffy before Municipal Judge Crowe in Crricago, when her husband, Peter Duffy, arrested on complaint of neighbors for heating his > wife, was arraigned in the Sheffield ftvpnnp oonrt* Admit,!ircr that flip dp fendant frequently struck her, she pit-aded for his release, saying "she did not mind it, as she was satisfied I that he loved her when he beat her." "If he didn't beat ine once in a while I'd tli.nk lie didn't love me any more," Mrs. Duffy pleaded. "A man's not a man that won't show he is the boss by licking his wife once in a while. I think the more of him for it." Judge Crowe smiled and said: "I have often heard it said that women love best the hand that beats them, but I have never before heard a woman admit it. However, Mrs. Duffy, you are the judge in this case. The prhoner is discharged." Would Have Cost Him His Life.
