In a state bordering on insanity, said to have been brought on by drink and the fact that hi* wife had refused to live with him, R /pert M. Fanning, aged 28 years, went to rhe police staion at New Bedford, Mass., from his home at West Port a few days age, and after producing a letter in whicn he had written of having murdered his wife, shot himself in the head, causing instant death. Following directions given in his letter, the officers went to West Port, j and at a spot indicated, about a half | | mile from her home, found the body j j of Mrs. Fanning, who apparently had j been killed with a hatchet. Fanning a rived at the police sta- ! tion in his automobile. He was in I such a condition that it was with diffi- ! cultv he could make himself under- ' stood. He produced a letter from his pocket, and, a'tcr making * eve ;al fi I tile attempts to read it,'handed it to j j an officer. I After the officer had read the letter j I V. n o or} aoa.v\? "What do you want me to do about it?" "Just this," was the reply, and Fanning with a quick motion, produced a big revolver, placed the muzzle to his mouth and fired. He fell dead instantly. Soldier Balks Death Plot. It seemed to J. A. Stone, a civil war veteran, of Kemp, Tex., that a plot existed between a desperate lung trouble a id the grave to cause his death "I contracted a stubborn cold," he writes "that developed a cough that stuck to me in spite of all remedies, for years. My weight ran down to 130 pounds. Then I began to use Dr. KiDg's New Discovery, which restored my health completely. I now weigh 178 pounds." Nusbaum, Batesville, Indiana, writes: **Last year I suffered for three months with a 6ummercold so distressing that it interfered with my business. I had many of the symptoms of hay fever, and a doctor's prescription did not reach my case, and I took several medicines which seemed only to aggravate it, Fortunately I insisted upon having Foley's Honey and Tar. It quickly cured me. My wife has since used roiey's Houpy and Tar with the same success.'' Sold by All Druggists and Henry Drug Store, Chapin, S. C. Macon Girl Victim of Murder.1 Macon, Ga, July 29.?That Lottie j Faircloth, the eighteen-year-old young j woman whose dodv was found in the j Oemulogee River yesterday, was the ! victim or murder is now the opinion of j Chief of Police Westcctt, who to-day j began a searching investigated. The j verdict at the coroner's inqueionwas* to i the effect that the young woman corn- . mitted suicide, being based almost j soh ly ontlie identification of a note by 1 Len Revar, a young man to whom it > was addressed Officers have been unable to further ! i.lentify this note. That Miss r aircloth and Levearquar- 1 relied Friday night is bolieved by the 1 officers, who made a rigid investigation : among friends of the young couple to- I day. Last week a young man who had j confidence of his employers aud the ! entire community, a bank cashier. ! was found short in 1 is cash $35,000, | he having left his home. He confess- j ed to having taken the money, said ho j had lost it in speculating. The story j is an old one that has been often r^- 1 told. So much for our money fevered age, and the false values we put on things. One cannot rest satisfied with simple living, but. must strive for more, more, and yet more, until home is broken up and happiness impossible. The cry of the age seems to be "Get money, fairly if possible, but GET IT!" We have travelled far from the road of the wise writer who pleaded, "Lord, give me neither poverty nor riches; lest I be full and forget thee, or lest I steal and take thy name in vain." We need to get back to this attitude, to humble ourselves, to see things in their true values. In many respects our times are far better than t he past, but in the wholesome and simple lives of our forefathers there is much that is worth preserving. They did not, perhaps, live in as fine houses as their children, but their homes were the scenes of natural living and the joys that all may share, which are, after all, the real joys, the common joys of small sacrifices, of the love of children and parents, the peace of the rest that follows after toil. Once we grasp these things again we are safe, and the temptation to use dishonest means to make money has no fears for us.?Carolina Spartan. Deafness Cannot be Cured by local applications, as they cannot reach the diseased portion of the ear. There is only one way to care deafness, and that is by constitutional remedies. Deafness is caused by an inflamed condition of the mucous lining of the Eustachian Tube. When this tube is inflamed. yon have a rumbling sound or imperfect hearing, and when it is entirely closed, Deafness is the result, and unless the inflammation can be taken out and this tube restored to its normal condition, hearing will be destroyed forever; nine cases out of ten are caused by Catarrh, which is nothing bat an inflamed condition of the mucous surfaces. We will give One Hundred Dollars for any case of Deafness (caused by catarrh) that cannot be cured by Hall's Catarrh Cure. Send for circulars, free. F. J. CHENEY & CO., Toledo, 0.
