The state board of health has ordered another called conference on pellagra to be held in Columbia during the state fair in October, the conference held last year having been productive of much good. The Abbeville county Medical Society will devote its next meeting on August 6 to consideration of pellagra, and invitations have been extended to Dr. Babcock, Dr. Lavinder, Dr. McConnell. of Chester, Dr. Watson and Dr. Williams of Columbia and other physicians who have studied the disease. Special Term Ordered. Governor Ansel ha9 appointed Judge John S. Wilson to preside over the special term of the criminal court, called for Georgetown, for the trial of the negro John Jenkins, who is charged with assaulting a young teacher in that county recently. The trial will begin July 27. Jenkins is now in the penitentiary for safe keeping. Greenville Subscribers Paid. v Comptroller General Jones has issued a pay warrant to the people or' Greenville for ?1,496.78 and sent it to State Senator Mauldin, of that county in accordance with a resolution Mr. Mauldin had passed at the last legislature to reimburse Greenville subscribers to the fund raised there to entertain the old veterans last summer. The State of South Carolina has established a free laboratory in Columbia. It opened a few days ago with Dr. F. A. Coward in charge under the direction of the State Board of Health. Officer Williams has sent the following letter to every physician_in South Carolina: 'Tiie State board ot neaitn announoea with genuine pleasure that its laboratory will be ready for work July 1. The work of this laboratory is intended for the benefit of citizens of the State, and will be open to them through the medical profession. "The scope of work to be carried on will be confined for the present at least, to bacteriological examinations looking to the prevention of contagious and infectious diseases, and to the administration of the Pasteur treatment for babies. "The bacteriological will cover examinations of water, milk, bacillus, blood for the presence of malarial parasites widal test, cultures for diptheria, feces Jot hook worms and smears in general. "In the Pasteur department examinations will be made of animals suspected of rabies, and persons bitten by animals found to be rabid will be treated.
