In an article entitled "A Substitute for Matrimony'' in the February Woman's Home Companion, Anna Steese Richardson proves conclusively that the majority of business girls of today do not marry because the men they might marry do not earn as much money as they do. Mrs. Richardson speaks with authority?she has a greater experience than perhaps any other woman in America. She concludes her article thus': The business woman of today is achieving financial success at the sacrifice of domestic content and maternal instinct. Is it worth while?" This is the most dangerous time of the year to catch cold, and it is the hardest time to cure it. If you should take a cold, a few doses of Kennedy's Laxative Cough Syrup will act very promptly. Its laxative principle cures the cold by driving it from the system by a gentle but natural action of the bowels. Children especially like Kennedy's Laxative Cough Syrup, as it tastes so good, nearly like maple sugar. It is sold by Kaufmann Drug Co. Against the Law. Fox Goes to Fort Worth, Texas, as First Lieutenant. In the recent examinations held for commissions in the medical corps of the United State army, Dr J. S. Fox, one of the surgeons at the St Francis Xavier Hospital, was a successful contestant, and the war department has notified him that he will becmmissioned afirst lieutenant, and will be ordered to proceed to a post in the West. One hundred doctors took the examination for the appointments, but only thirteen were successful. Dr Fox, who will be one of the youngest surgeons in the army, was high up in the list of the fortunate ones. Dr Fox is a son of the late Dr T. S. Fox, of Batesburg, who was a distinguished surgeon in the Confederate army. He is a nephew of Mr J. J. Fox, of Lexington. Dr Fox is 29 year of age, and was born in Batesburg, S. C. After completing the high school at that place he entered Richmond College Richmond, Va., and was there for three years, when he entered the Medical College at Baltimore. Fourteen months ago he came to Charleston to accept an appointment as one of the house surgeons of the St Francis Xavier Infirmary, and during his stay in this city has made a fine record for himself and now has many friends here. When seen yesterday Dr Fox stated that he had not yet received his commission, but expected it during the early part of this week. As soon as this important paper arrives he will leave here for Fort Sam Houston, Texas, the station department. There are at present several troops of the 3d cavalry and a battalion of light artillery from the 3d field artillery regiment stationed at this important post, which is considered to be one of the most agreeable army posts in the South. On October 1, Dr Fox will be ordered to report to Washington, where he will be detailed to attend the Army Medical College for a period of eight months.?News Conrier. Night On Bald Mountain.
