Alabama Negro Lynched.
Scott9boro, Ala, January .?The
negro who attempted to assault the
daguhter of James Ridley, of Bolivar,
last night, was lynched to-night.
A large barn, together with a lot of
live stock and feed 9tuff of Ex Tax
Collector James Ridley* of Bolivar,
was set on fire and burned la9t nigh,
bv a discharged negro man servantt
While the barn was burning and the
men were at the fire, the negro Entered
the residence and attempted to assault
a young married daughter of Mr.
Ridley. She recogized him and
gamely defended herself, and shot at
the negro as he ran off.
A large posse with bloodhounds from
Chattanooga and Tracy Citv were
soon in pursuit, and at 11 o'clock tonight
it was reported that the negro
had been captured and lynched.

ITogro Buried in Cave-in.
Chester, January ?Special:
Hernton Chalk, a colored well-digger,
was buried by a cave-in while digging a
well on Mr. Geo W. Bvers's place at
Wilksburg Friday morning, and a
companion, Wallace Brown, wae also
partly buried in the debris, but was
rescued without serious hurt. The
two men had dug down for a distance
of twenty-five feet through earth,
when they struck soft rock which made
blasting necessary. This, it is supposed,
is what caused the cave-in. Chalk had
his neck and jaw broken, and is
required three hours of digging to
bring his body out of ruins. Brown was
on the opposite side ef the well, and
was only partially covered.

Lived With Broken Neck, j
Atlanta, January?At a coroner's j
inque9t here to-day in the death of
Frank Carter, 60 years old, it was
testified that he had broken his neck j
seventeen years ago and had lived i <
without serious inconvenience from ! '
this accident. Carter died of apoplexy. j
When the police found that his neck !
was broken they suspected foul play :
and ordered the inquest, and the testimony
that his neck had been broken
for seventeen years was accepted as
satisfactory.
A Common Cold.
w i
We claim that if catching cold could
be ayoided some of the most dangerous
and fatal diseases would never be heard
of. A cold often forms a culture bed for
germs of infectious diseases. Consump- j
tion, pneumonia, diphtheria and scarlet |
fever, four of the most dangerous and j
fatal diseases, are of this class. The |
culture bed formed by the cold favors I
the development of the germs of the*-e j
diseases, that would not otherwise find !
lodgment There is little danger, how- j
ever, of any of these diseases being con- j
tracted when a good expectorant cough ;
medicine like Chamberlain's Cough j
Remedy is used. It cleans out these i
culture beds that favor the develop- j
ment of the germs of these diseases, j
That is why this remedy has proved so j
universally successful in preventing j
pneumonia. It not only cures your ;
cold quickly, but minimizes the risk of j
contracting these dangerous diseases, j

The commission is practically ready
to open the home and there are now
numbers of applicants from some of
the counties. The law requires that
onto two applicants from each county
be admitted, but this will probably be
changed at the present legislative
session.
