Xaay Murders Committed.
At Laporte, Ind., a terrible murder
mystery is now being investigated.
Mrs. Bell Gunness, who was the promoter
of a matrimonial agency for
many years past, is alleged to have
killed a score or more people during
her career. It is said tnat she would
have men call to see her and would
then get them out of the way by
different means. Her scheme to obtain
property in this way was not
known until last week when her residence
was burned and in clearing the
wreckage the crimes of the terrible
murderess were revealed. Several
. bodies were found in the debris. The
investigation has not been completed.

To the Editor of The Dispatch:
While I appreciate the action of my
friends in placing my name before the
voters of Lexington county as a candidate
for the State Legislature, circumstances
compel me to decline entering
the race at this time. To represent
the good people of this county
in the general assembly is an honor
and a privilege that any loyal citizen
should covet, and the manifestations
of my friends has been a source of
great pleasure and gratification tome.
Assuring my friends and the public
generally that, as a true citizen, I
stand ready at any and all times to
render any service within my power,
I am, very respectfully,
WM. M. CARTER.

The T. P. A. convention and farmers'
meeting at Sumter last week was
one of the largest gatherings ever
held in South Carolina. It was a big
day for Sumter. Through the efforts
of Congressman Lever, Secretary
Wilson, of the department of agriculture,
was present and was the principal
speaker of the occasion. Congressman
Lever received an ovation, as is
always the case, and his speech was
well received,.

Tornadoes in Oklahoma.
At least eight persons were killed
and scores of others injured in the
several tornadoes in Northwestern
Oklahoma Sunday evening. The
town of Vici was totally destroyed.
At one point 15 young persons had
gathered for a Sunday evening social
when the storm lifted the honse off
the floor on which they were seated,
leaving the floor and young people
unharmed.
Baduce Acreage.
President J. A. Taylor of the National
Ginners Association, has issued
another appeal to growers of cotton
to reduce their acreage. He says that
the present area of cotton growing
land means 7 or 8 cents cotton to the
planter and no profit, while a reduction
in acreage would very shortly
bring about a rise in the price of the
staple to eleven or twelve cents, possibly
more.

As to Pensions.
Several inquiries have been made at
this office' in regard to the amount
each pensioner belonging to the general
roll received. We stated last
week that an error occurred in publishing
the roll and the amount instead
of being ?22.50 should have been
S-21.20. The same error occurred in
RichJand county. Our figures were
taken from The State. We hope this explanation
will be sufficient.

While temporarily insane, Mr9.

Horrible Crime Alleged.
One of the most horrible crimes in
the history of the state was committed
near Langley on Friday afternoon
about 4 o'clock when, it is alleged.
Henry Leophard, a young white man
about21 year9 old, lured his little first
cousin, Lula May Leophard, less than
nine years old, into the woods and
there criminally assaulted her.
The whole country around Langley
was greatly wrought up over the dastardly
and brutal act, and for a while
intense excitement prevailed. Leophard
was not suspected at first or no
doubt he would have been summarily
dealt with. On Saturdav he wa9 pos
itively identified by the little one* as
her assailant and he was rushed to
Augusta on a trolley car and later
carried to the penitentiary in Columbia
for safe-keeping.
The child is said to be in a critical
condition, but will recover. Leophard
denies the charge.
'Possum in The Coop.
A few nights ago, at a farm house
near Chapin, a commotion among the
chickens, when the farmer sent his
spouse out to see what was the trouble;
we suppose he was afraid to go,
lest he might run afoul of a burglar,
or something of the kind. After the
good wife had gone out and reported
that it was a snake in the chicken
house his courage came with leaps j
and bounds and he hastened out to !
"do up" his snakeship, and running j
his hand into the ccop to pull out the .
intruder he quickly pulled it back |
with the teeth of a big, fat 'possum j
imbedded in the flesh.?Chapin Home j
