Vest's Tribute to the Dog Gentlemen of the Jury:?The be friend a man has in this world ms turn against him and become his ei emy. His son or daughter that he hi reared with loving care may prove ui grateful. Those who are nearest ar dearest to us, those whom we tru with our happiness and our goc name, may become traitors to the faith. The money that a man has 1 may lose. It flies away from hin perhaps when he needs it most, man's reputation may be sacrificed i a moment of ill-considered actioi The people who ore prone to fall o their knees to do us honor when su( cess is with us, may be the first t throw the stone of malice when failui settles its cloud upon our heads. Tfc one absolutely unselfish friend that man can have in this world, the or that never deserts him, the one thi never proves ungrateful or treacl erous, is his dog. Gentlemen of the jury, a man's do stands by him in prosperity and i poverty, in health and in sicknesi He will kiss the hand that has no foe to offer, he will lick the wounds an sores that come in an encounter wit the roughness of the world. He guarc the sleep of his pauper master as if h ? ttti n ~ j were a prince, wxieu an uiuci xacuu j desert he remains. When riches tak wings and reputation fall9 to pieces he is as constant in his love as th sun in its journey through the heavens If fortune drives the master forth a outcast in the world, friendless an homeless, the faithful dog asks n higher privilege than that of accon panying him to guard against dangei to fight against his enemies, and whe the last scene of all comes, and deat takes the master in its embrace an his body is laid away in the col ground, no matter if all othei friend purstfe their way, there by his grave side will the n6ble dog be found, hi head between his paws, his *eyes sad open in alert watchfulness,. faithfr and true even to death.
