Our sky is black and hung with
somber clouds; oar vision is o'ercast
with the gloom of sorrow and every
sound that strikes our cars has in it a
cadence of despair.
In the absence of those loved ones
who have gone before, the world
seems empty and cheerless to U9 and
in our hearts there is a dreary, dismal
aching void. The only consolation
that is vouchsafed to us is the sweet
realization that our loved ones are in
peace. The one we have for so long
been associated, and for so long a
time received his Jove and tender care
and advice is now in that land 4'where
the weary are at rest" and'where the
poor, worm frame will never more be
racked with the agonies of earthly

To dwell with him who gave;
Another little darling boy,
Is sheltered in the grave. "God

Amidst His shining band;
And so He bent with loving smile,
And clasped our Boynton's hand."

Governor Glenn of North Carolina
recently sent a letter to Senators
Simmons and Overman, in which
he earnestly begs of them that
they support the efforts of Senators
Tillman and Clay to pass a law prohibiting
liquor being shipped by one
State into a prohibition territory of
another State. He will ask the Representatives
of North Carolina to support
such a bill in the House.

Cotton Mill in Receiver's Hand.
The Hugenot Cotton Mills of Greenville
were placed in the hands of a
receiver on Saturday. It is estimated
that the debts against the plant will
reach $150,000. On paper the mill
with its machinery and real estate is
worth about the same amount.
This means that the stock, consisting
of $90,090 common and $50,000 preferred,
is practically worthless as
1 things now stand.

The Pure Pood Law.
Secretary Wilson says, "One of the
objects of the law is to inform the consumer
of the presence of certain harmful
drugs in medicines.'* The law requires
that the amount of chloroform, opium,
morphine, and other habit forming
drugs be stated on the label of each
bottle. The manufacturers of Chamberlain's.
Cough Remedy have always
claimed that their remedy did not contain
any of these drugs, and the truth
of this claim is now fully proven, as no
mention of them is made on the label.
This remedy is not only one of the
safest, but one of the best in use for
coughs and colds. ltd value has been
proven beyond question during the many
years it has been in general use. For
sale by Kanfmann Drug.

Raleigh, N. C., Jan. 17.?A special
from Davidson, N. C., says:
"Abrntal murder was committed,
near here, yesterday morning when
Ezekiel Gregory, a farmer over 60
years of age, was killed with an . axe
. by his son Dave. The murderer fled,
accomoanied by his wife, but both
were arrested, near Mooresville, ZT.
C.t to-night.
"The substance of the story gathered
from the daughter of the dead
man was that following an altercation
in regard to rising, the son went from
the house into the yard and defied his
father to cross a line drawn with the
blade of the aze in the earth. The
father crossed the line, a blow was
struck and the daughter rushed out to
find her father prostrate. The injured
man did not recover consciousness.
Young Gregory is in jail in Charlotte."

I Cooper Says internal
! Suffering E
The following remarkable statement
"was recently made by L. T. Cooper.
It concerns the preparation which has
been so widely discussed throughout
the country during the past year, and
has sold in such enormous quantities
in leading cities:
"It is now a well-known fact that
"wherever I have introduced my New
Discovery medicine, hundreds of people
have brought internal parasites,
or tapeworms, to me. In many cases
these people did not know the nature
of the parasite, and were consequently
extremely nervous until I explained
the matter to them. In some cities so
many have had this experience that
the public generally became alarmed.
"I talfe this opportunity of explaining
what these creatures are, and what
I have learned about them in the past.
"Tapeworms are much more common
than would be supposed. I venture
to say that ten per cent, of all
chronic stomach trouble, or what is
known as a ^rundown' condition, is
caused by them. An individual may
suffer for years with one of these great
parasites and not he aware of it.
