The Colombia State printed an interesting story Friday in connection with a pot of gold, said to have been dug up in that city a few days ago by Mr. J. A. Blackwelder, president of the Bank of Chapin, and Police Officer Fulmer of Columbia. The story is interesting in every detail, and if true, no doubt Messrs. Blackwelder and Fulmer will hereafter have no fear of "money panics." It is claimed that the "pot" was dug up under a house on Lincoln street, formerly occupied by a Mr. Wessinger, but owned by a colored woman, from whom the gentlemen mentioned leased the building for twelve months, paying Her $25 a month in advance. It has long been claimed, so the story goes, that there was hidden treasure some where on the premises. C., Jan. 9.?A long distance phone from Selma, N. C., reports the lynching at Pine Level, Johnston county, of a strange negrc at the* hands of a negro mob. The strange negro, purporting to be advance agent of a "big show," fakec the negro residents into attendance on what turned out to be a one-mar performance by the strange dark} himself. Covered with guano sacks, the mob entered the negro's boarding house early Tuesday morning and took hiir forcibly to the woods. His body wai found at daylight on the Southeri: railroad tracks. Mrs. Mary E. Hooker was born February 7, 1838, and died January 5, i 1908, making her earthly pilgrimage a little less than 70 years. She joined l j Ebenezer Methodist church early in ! life and still held her membership ! there at death. In 1862 she was mar- j ried to Mr. L. S. Although an invalid and great sufferer for eleven years, her faith in God grew stronger and as the end drew near she said to friends around her bedside: "I have no fear of death, I am ready to go." The matter should be taken up just as soon as that body assembles and something done to put the State . in a position to hold a legal election. 1 It is a matter of the greatest impor- ^ tance to the people of the State. One great trouble with the present Condition of the situation is in onr primary elections. The voters have learned to think that a primary nomination amounts to an election, and they have become indifferent to and care very little about a general election. The voting in the primaries may be slack, but it cannot be in a general election. Something along that line will have to be done in order to make the people secure proper registration certificates. We still believe in our former suggestion as to having one commissioner with an office at the court house under strict rules and regulations.? Edgefield News. A Higher Health Level.
