Asheville, N. C., Nov. 13.?Half an
hour after Clarke Norton killed Franklin
at White Rock, N. C., Monday, he
and Miss Elizabeth Gentry, for whom
they were both suitors* were married.
Norton wa<s not arrested until the
following morning, when he was taken
to jail at Marshall, N. C. He was accompanied
by his bride, who begged
to be allowed to go to jail with him,
but was refused. She and Norton assert
that Norton shot and killed Franklin
in self defense. They say Franklin
had found out that Norton and
Miss Gentry were going to be secretly
married, and had gone to the girl's

Franklin, it is alleged, started

upon him, his first shot taking effect
in Franklin's heart and killing him al?

Social Club on West Washington
street in Columbia and the alleged
proprietor R. Leon Shull, restraining
the respondents from maintaining an
alleged nuisance where persons are
alleged to be permitted to congregate
for ihe purpose of buying and drink

was obtained by Attorney General

ago and presented affidavits and comj

Cbriea Hints.
Lettuce plants set out now will
make early heads in the spring. It is
a good time to set out cabbage plants.
They ought to be down in the bottom
of furrows. Sometimes potatoes
planted in December do well. We do
: not advise that plan. Wait till spring.
In the country pine brush is handy.
It is a good protection for cabbage
and turnips. If onions are up and
growing scatter loose light manure
from the cow lot over the ground.
They are hardy and will stand the
winter. It is not too late now to
plant onion sets, but they should have
gone in during October.

A Good Wcman.
The life of a good woman is the one
thing more precious than all others in
all ' that conspires to maintain the
higher civilization of mankind, and
the one thing which, when removed
from its sphere in society, can be estimated
only ont of the depths of the
aching heart. There is nothing in all
earth that can compensate the family
circle, the church and^society at large
for the loss sustained in the death of
a good woman, especially one who
has been consecrated to the duties of
a wife and mother.?Columbia Record.
