IE|" The Lexington Dispatch. Wednesday, October 9,1907. I: IS BOLL WEEVIL IN TSIS STATE? Mr. B. F. Taylor Shows How it Might Have Come. T? T? Tavlrtk tha sporAfcarv of I the South Carolina Cotton Seed Crushers? association, said yesterday that, ; - if the report should prove true concerning the boll weevil, the method of introduction into the State is not hard to find. Ever since last May, when the shortage of the cotton seed hull supply in this State became apparent, brokers and dealers have been buying hulls from the West. . It is impossible to tell where these hulls came /from, as many of them were reshipped from Atlanta. The oil mi$Bs realized the danger and discussed the- matter frequently and finally decided to refuse to buy any of the western hulls. Cotton seed hulls offer an ideal method for the hibernation of the boll weevil and if these hulls are produced from an infected seed or in a territory infected by the weevil it is almost a certainty that the hulls will have numbers of the pests in them. The proper step should be to quarantine against any halls or agricultural product shipped from infected territorv. The- department of agriculture should look, closely after this, and especially IR&~ after hull shipments, he says. s?R There is a poor sal? for hulls in Tex- j as and the prices ruling in this State for this product offer an .unusual opportunity for brokers, dealers and manufacturers to ship the hulls from infected territory into this State at a handosme profit. The freight rates from the West also encourage such shipments, Laurens is in the midst of the greatest hull using section of the State and prices are higher in that section than anywhere?at places the hulls are selling at $15 per ton?it is no surprise therefore that the report about the boll weevil sho Id come. Especially when the dealers in hulls are not patriotic enough to refuse the Western shipments. I[j^y Parties have been known to go to the railroads asking for a reduction in rates from the West so that they could get the hulls in at a lower cost. At the urgent request of the oil mill as- ; sociation, the parties referred to stopped their negotiations but shipments i from west of the Mississippi are positively known to have come into the State. / Mr. E; D. Smith, field agent; goes today to a meeting of the executive committee of the Southern Cotton association at Jackson, Miss. He urges the Laurens farmers to send him ] samples of the infested plants in that county. Mr. Smith would like to see the weed, leaves, bolls and allparteof the cotton so that if the pest he not the weevil he may submit it to far- 1 mers from different sections for an opinion. In the meantime he advises tne Laurens farmers to get into communication with Prof. Chas. H. Chamblfes at"Clemson Coleg*.?Frbm The . State. . I State of Ohio, City of Toledo, ) ? Raw!. \ N As he had the papers necessary in the ?Hir ;' case I think the managers should have allowed him to vote. I will give my reasons: He had complied with the law. His registration ticket. had . been issued by the authorized author1 ities. If not an examination of his ticket would have easily detected the (v fraud, as everybody knows the band writing of the different boards, or if not, there are always present certificates to compare. Mr. Bawl was deprived of his right of suffrage by no act of his own, and somebody has committed a grievous wrong. I have been a manager ever since the law was enacted and have always let a man vote if he had a registration certificate that was issued by the county board. I hope there is no spite work going on at tnat place and that everything will be explained $9 my old friend's satisfaction. FAIR PLAY. [Women Avoid Operations When a woman suffering" from female trouble is told that an operation is necessary, it, of course, frightens her. The very thought of the hospital, the operating table and the knife strikes terror to her heart. It is quite true that these troubles may reach a stage where an operation is the onlv resource, but a great many women have been cured by Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound after an operation has been decided upon as the only cure. The strongest and most grateful statements possible to make come fro Lydia E Pinkham's V made from native roots and herbs, hi evidenced by Miss Rose Moore's case, < Dear Mrs. Pinkham:-,4Lydia E. This jvord when fully defined means a great deal. It is an excellent trait of character that some men possess on earth and one that all might possess at will. To be strictly honest is to be possessor of one of the many noble virtues in the life of humanity, and he who has acquired this and has put it into practical use among bis fellowmen, never conceives any cause for; regret of same. I feel confident that honesty stands closely related (as it were; to ijoanness, but by no means would I say that an average honest man means a Christian one, but on the other hand, every contrite Christian man is honest in its loftiest degree. Among such men we always' find peace, friendship, "* truth, sincerity and happiness, and all together corv strnct a wonderful union. Show me one who deals honestly under any circumstances with those he comes in contact, and I will point out to you one who has a decided tendency toward honest dealing with almighty God, therefore only a proper touch of the holy spirit is required to fill his heart with genuine Christian love. I, the writer, have had this important lesson taught me in early chilhood by my parents and other earthly superiors; it has developed in me as did my body and age, and today 1 am thankful to these teachers and to my God. , Young man! Young woman! Be honest even if it costs life, for "Honesty is the best policy.-?' "That's Who." Nov. 29, '05. Aiken, Oct. 2.?The Fallaw case is making good headway, and it is probable that the State will close its case tonight. Rofos Corder, an important witness for the State, was put on the stand late yesterday and testified in substance: That he was working in the fi?i(i with Clint Fallaw on .the morning of the killing; that he had seen Lee Fallaw pass along going to the plum trees near there; that Clint Fallaw had told him where the other boys were working, but that he saw none of them just at the time the shooting took place. He, however, in Trie nrAQO.OT,amina+.inn that he saw George Mabu9 go by in his buggy and at that time Clint Fallaw was in the field with him, and that Clint could not possibly have overtaken Mabus down the road and had a hand in the shooting, as it had only been a very few minutes since he saw Clint in the field when the shooting was heard. Numerous witnesses were put up to show that Lee Fallaw had tried to buy buckshot just a few days be^re the killing at Ridge Spring, but <he State failed to show that he did buy buckshot at Ridge Spring or any^ where. Quite $ number of witnesses have been put on the stand to testify as to the tracks that led up to and away from the place of the killing, but so far nothing definite has been proven as to this. Mrs. Whittle testis tied that she saw the Fallaw boys going to the place where the killing Jook place and returning. Henry E. Jones, of Tampa, Fla., writes: * "I can thank God for my present health, due to Foley's Kidney Cure, I tried doctors and all kinds of kidney cures, but nothing done me much good till I took Foley's Kidney Cure. Four bottles cured me, and I have no more pain in my back and shoulders. I am 62 years old, aud suffered long, but thanks to Foley's Kidney Cure I am well and can walk and enjoy mvseii. it is a pleasure to recommend it to those needing a kidney medicine." Derrick's Drug Store. Leonard Gillis of Lothair, Ga., while with a hunting party wa9 found with the top of his head blown off by the discharge of his shot gun. No one was with him when it occurred, but it is thought that he committed suicide. In most cases consumption results from a neglected or improperly treated cold. Foley's Honey and Tar cures the most obstinate coughs and prevents serrious results.
